Once again - thanks Joe. Some great shots and your usual high standard of narrative.

Oh - the stadium like building in London is 'The O2' - formerly the 'Millennium Dome'. Lots of great scenery around London City airport, but serious noise restrictions and a 5.5 degree glideslope!

Joe.

those pics keep making we feel poor with my system, but Í´ll come after you.

Keep having celebrities in your plane, do you? Do you remember to correct the weight of the plane for all those people? I fly with the weight of two people. Myself and Mr.Smith, and as I don´t know what he weighs, and refuse to tell my own weight, I can only say that both have been set within the limit of mammals.

Remember that the centerline costs you 2 points pr. foot you are off center. so 12 meters (and that is not much in a 737) is 36 feet and that is 72 points gone down the drain, so the zero landingscore you presented... well just remember to hit that damn line.

I´m in Paris enjoying a little French wine. Actually flew over with Mr.Whittle, as Smith and Aviatrix was in Paris already. Smith has agreed to pick up his contract with me, and Whittle is escorting Aviatrix home to Wales.

I´m off for Spain tonight, and then Portugal, before hitting the African continent. See you later alligator...

LPPT to LPMA (October 15th, 2008) Lisbon, Portugal to Madeira, Portugal

There is an airport out in the middle of nowhere off the coast of Africa and just south of Portugal called Funchal, Medeira.  The real airport actually has a bridge runway at one end of it.  The airport is actually 710 feet in the air.  Unfortunately my scenery didn't show the bridge, but I think from the pictures you'll get the idea.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeira_Airport   (Check out pictures on lower right side)

As you can see, this airport is up there!  I wanted to see what I was up against when I brought the heavy jet in.

Hey look, an American plane here in Portugal.  Flight line with TAP - Cool Shot.  Apparently the fire department was deployed for our flight.  Calm down people!

Taxiing out to runway, shortly after take off - a little downtown area and a really cool bridge.  Overlooking the Lisbon area.

Leaving the pennisula.  Oh a 100nm from Lisbon and nothing but water....another 100 nm and still nothing but water!  Lifevests - Check!

100nm out - Can finally see the island.  A small island just before Madeira.  As you can see this is going to be landing on an aircraft carrier on 710 feet up!

Making sure I'm high enough...rather be high than low, if you know what I mean.  Looks like we are landing in a Mountain.

Way off center, but I got it down.  Taxiing to gate and upon arrival and unloading luggage we evidently had a mishap.  We had the JFK luggage on our plane.  Free vouchers for all.

Landing Score:0.00

Landing was successful in the following areas:

  • Distance from runway numbers (visual approach): 726 feet

Landing included the following problems:

  • No glideslope information was available on visual approach.
  • No runway alignment information was available on visual approach.
  • Too hard - may have damaged your landing gear.
  • No glideslope - could not compare flare to glideslope.
  • Poor steering after landing - stay on the centre line.

Definite room for improvement...

Flight Score:135.64

Flight included the following problems:

  • Narrowly missed tail strike - watch your pitch: this could have been bad.  (My bad - pulled up a little too hard on takeoff)
  • Narrowly missed obstacles - plan your safety altitudes.  (This one bugs me....there was nothing in the way???)
  • Poorly trimmed aircraft - trimmers are there to help: use them.  (As always...sheez Mr. Smith - No appreciation for the difficulty of the landing)

Definite room for improvement...

LPMA to GCXO (October 19th, 2008) Madeira, Portugal to Los Rodeos, Canary Islands

I overheard in a bar at Madeira that the Canary Islands have the most beautiful canary birds.  So why not waste some fuel and go check it out.  My ornothogist degree from a box of cereal back in '85 paid off.  Spotted a few birds.

Pushing back overlooking a lone palm tree and a cool rock formation.  Think I'm gonna open a bar franchise out there.  One of those turn around runways.

Screaming down the runway...approximately 90 knots...need some more speed.  Geez Maverick, are we in an F-15 right now.  And now the trek over the water...

100 nm out, land ho!  ATC had me fly south of the airport, make some right turns to bring her down.  Notice the nice blue skies....

Closing in on final...lining up nicely, when my favorite FSX weather decides to go foggy?  #$!~$%~!#$ What the #!$!@#!@#..   Ladies/Gents, kiss your wife if you gottem'

Well I made it...but it wasn't pretty....#$!$!#$!%!@%$

Landing Score:29.00      (Shut the heck up people, I got you there in one piece...)

Landing included the following problems:

  • Poor glideslope on ILS approach - you can do better.
  • Glideslope lost before you touched down - not your best effort.
  • Not near the centre line - you can do better.
  • Throttle(s) forward - should be idle.

Flight Score:129.02

Flight included the following problems:

  • Airspeed too low - you are risking stalls.
  • Narrowly missed tail strike - watch your pitch: this could have been bad.   (Maverick was flying)
  • Narrowly missed obstacles - plan your safety altitudes.
  • Poorly trimmed aircraft - trimmers are there to help: use them.

GCXO to GCLP (October 19th, 2008) Los Rodeos, Canary Islands to Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

So I didn't find the birds I was looking for so, I overheard yet again that if I was to fly over to Gran Canaria, I'd find even larger canaries.  Is sombody pulling my leg?  Hopped in my trusty baron for a quick 60nm flight and do a little island observing...

Prechecks....check.  Why is it with FSX that they like to have you taxi for about 10 minutes?  Humm?  Why?  Lift off.

Little bit of everything in the next few pictures...sand, vegetation, mountains, vivid blue waters....our destination island in the distance.

Closing in on the northern part of the island, where yet once again FSX must make my flight about 20 minutes longer...

Flying down wind and gonna make a bunch of left turns to runway.  Flaps and gear down...check.

A little high, but that's ok....pretty good center job on runway...and an interesting building at airport....think it's not supposed to be there...

Landing Score:90.04

A splendid landing!

Flight Score:102.67

Flight included the following problems:

  • Exceeding flap speeds - your flaps may be damaged: have them checked.  (oops I put down flaps just a wee bit early...dang it!)
  • Nose held too low - we're not in combat.

GCLP to GMMN (October 19th, 2008) Gran Canaria, Canary Islands to Casablanca, Morocco

Been waiting all trip to say this.  "Frankly Mr. Smith, I don't give a damn."  There I said it.  I hear they have a bar where Bogart visited?

Today's flight plan has us following the western coast of Africa on into Casablanca.  Land ho!

Oh yea...let's go ahead and add more fog and shitty visability again for me.  Trust my instruments....damn...where is the damn runway?

Sheez...there she is.  Talk about your ugly green airplane.

Landing Score:123.95   Visibility: 3.73 Miles     Wind: 6 Knots   (I'll take that score any day)

A splendid landing!

Flight Score:136.63

Flight included the following problems:

  • Airspeed too low - you are risking stalls.  (When you can't see crap in front of your face...guess I was a little worried getting her down.)
  • Nose held too low - we're not in combat.

GMMN to GMME (October 20th, 2008) Casablanca, Morocco to Rabat, Morocco

Mandatory stop on WWT, and beings it's a short flight...fire up the ol' Baron and see if we can't get a high score.

Oh yeh...another long taxi...oh yeh let's add some more hold time to follow a couple Royal Air Morroc 737's.  Waiting patiently for my number to be called.  B1 - Bingo

Leaving Casablanca behind.  looking like a pretty nice day to be flying...Oh yeh...let's go ahead and put some more fog in...please...

Where's the damn runway again....oh yea...let's clear up the bad weather as I'm landing...sheez!

Landing Score:52.89

Landing included the following problems:

  • No glideslope - could not compare flare to glideslope.

Flight Score:103.21

Flight included the following problems:

  • Rapid descent - dangerous and uncomfortable.
  • Nose held too low - we're not in combat.

I'm really beginning to hate this Baron....it has got to be the touchiest plane I fly on this tour...

GMME to LXGB (October 20th, 2008) Rabat, Morocco to Rock of Gibraltor

Ok...I have Prudential for my life insurance policy in real life.  Now why go to my local office, discuss coverages, etc when I can fly to the Prudential Rock?  That's what I was thinking.  Let's go to the Real Rock!  Gibraltor.  What a fantastic view!

Leaving Rabat, making the taxi with my fine Delta plane.

Today will head up north and head towards Portugal and Spain.  The last part of Africa on the right.

Fly a little more north then a right turn to home.  Oh please FSX ATC, let's go ahead and clip some mountains on the way in.

That's right...let's get real close and see if we can scare some passengers.  Cool looking view eh?

Lining up nicely is all I can say....I think there is a runway below me...hope I hit concrete...and check out that mountain side....straight up baby.

Landing Score:0.00  (Well only landed 1829 feet from numbers!)

Landing included the following problems:

  • Throttle(s) forward - should be idle.

Flight Score:138.50

Flight included the following problems:

  • Poorly trimmed aircraft - trimmers are there to help: use them.

LXGB to DAAG (October 20th, 2008) Rock of Gibraltor to Algiers, Algeria

Well I got my 7 million dollar policy all squared away.  Had a little difficulty with the claims agent, but he eventually came around and saw it my way.  Perhaps it was a little of the Italian in me that made him see it my way, or maybe I told him I was related to Tony Soprano?  Anyway, off to tour the entire continent of Africa now.  First stop Algeria.

What the hell is this...self service gas?  This 2nd picture is one of my favorites so far.  Good looking pilot eh?

Really neat little airport, and again another shot looking back at the Rock!  {insert Sean Connery voice...Get a piece of the Rock!}

Africa to the south....and Spain to the north.

Couldn't be lined up any better. Nutted the landing...Come on Mr. Smith rob me of my points!

Algiers countryside.  Hey some new airplanes - Qatar jumbo's.

Landing Score:122.65

Landing included the following problems:

  • Too hard - may have damaged your landing gear.

Flight Score:146.77   (Thought it was one of my highest one's, but I've got a better one out there...)

A smooth flight!
