Hi:
Thanks for your report.
I sounds like FSFlyingSchool is running fine - if it cannot find an FSR file which exactly matches the plane in use it estimates the values based on the data it finds in the FSX folders.

SquadronLeader (2/17/2015) if it cannot find an FSR file which exactly matches the plane in use it estimates the values based on the data it finds in the FSX folders.
Hi,
Just registered to say I'm having this issue too and I think at the bottom of it is that FSFS doesn't appear to estimate values for an unknown aircraft. I get notification that it's doing so but the FSFS aircraft screen stays looking like this
The flight plan records the flight and knows the name of the aircraft but the aircraft info never appears on the aircraft tab.
piloting Supermarine Spitfire Mk XIV RM787 Airshow CV ended 26 February 2015 at 10:58
FSFlyingSchool Pro 2015 January 6 2015)
Using: FSX
Visibility: 1.00 Miles Wind: 17 Knots
Aircraft: Supermarine ID: RM787 Airline: Flight:
Flight plan: EGHA TO EGGD Bristol:Bristol International NAV1: IBTS
Failure(s): None at landing
Failure Event(s) (Zulu Time): None
Failure Bonus:0% Flight Duration:00 Hours 17 Mins 57 Secs
Landing Score:4542.89
I've tried making an *.FSU but FSFS doesn't detect or load it (even if named correctly). Like the previous poster, the only way I can get this to work is
make a copy of the spare FSU file.
name it "~aircraftname~.FSR"
FSFS detects this file and loads the FSR data (it's all zero at this stage)
I can then switch the radio button and enter my own figures.
When I save the program then makes an FSU file and I can delete the FSR file I made.
I'm using version 8.1 upgraded from 7.7 which was upgraded from 7.0 and the Steam version of FSX. Both FSX and FSFS are installed in c:\games and not 'my programs' and running under admin account.

Hi:
We added the feature to estimate values many years ago - but you've clearly experienced a problem so can you try these steps with a few different airplanes?
In this example I am using a DH Dragon Rapide - it has neither FSR nor FSU on the PC in question.
When an aircraft that has neither an FSR nor an FSU file is detected, the pilot is briefly shown this message...
If the pilot then moves to the Aircraft screen - the following is shown. We can see that the data is coming directly from the simulator (folder) and that values have been estimated.
If the pilot then disconnects from FSFS - the following is shown - which has its own instructions.
If the pilot then goes to the aircraft screen and clicks User Specified Data and Save User Data then an FSU file is created and the data shown will always be used by FSFS for that aircraft.
If the pilot connects to the simulator again, the aircraft screen now shows that the source of the data is the FSU file.
Please try these steps with a few different airplanes that have neither FSR nor FSU files on the PC and let me know how you get on.

Hi,
That's what I have done and the data source always shows blank with 888s entered as values.
The only way I can get FSFS to show the correct information in the data source path is to make the fake FSR file as described.
Once I have done this and made my FSU file with my own values I can use that and the aircraft works with FSFS. Or seems to. But one detail I just remembered, if I click on the "unknown" radio button once FSFS has the correct path I get a "cannot find aircraft.cfg" error.
I'm also having the issue of the instructor repeatedly telling me to retract the spoilers on aircraft that don't have spoilers even when this option is disabled in the aircraft options for FSFS too. I wonder if this is related? I've seen other posts describing this.
edit: just to add I've been through the steps described with RealAir Spitfire, JustFlight Chipmunk, Aerosoft Catalina and JustFlight EE F.6 Lightning (I have a hilarious log book report from this aircraft btw, instructor didn't appreciate mach2! ) - anyway, it was the same with all of them. Clearly something is very wrong but I'm not sure what it could be.

Hi - thanks for the feedback - always useful!
I think we are getting closer... when FSFS estimates the values for the plane it reads the aircraft.cfg file in the aircraft's folder within the simulator.
If it cannot find this, or cannot open it, there will be problems.
But... if the simulator cannot find the file - it will not load the aircraft at all - so it must be there - somewhere.
Can you tell me the exact full path of the following on your PC...
1. FSX
2. The folder(s) of the aircraft in question
3. FSFS
As for the spoliers - FSFS has read information from the simulator saying that the spoilers are present.
The checkbox only tells FSFS if spoilers are present - if it is not turned on this does not tell FSFS the aircraft does not have spoilers - but this is something we have long been looking into changing to force FSFS not to think spoilers are present.
There is a rough workaround to this - you can rename the file "RetractSpoilers.wav" within the folders of any of the instructors that you don't want to say it. Just rename to any other name, such as "DISABLED_RetractSpoilers.wav" and you will not hear it again.

Mhm, that's what's weird. The aircraft.cfg is there in the folder that FSFS is looking at.
Steam install is
C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX
FSFS install is
C:\Games\FlyingSchoolPro
FSFS has the FSX install
(it says no FSX found there because it's not running, if I start FSFS properly it connects properly.)
Edit: sorry, the aircraft are all in their own folders in
C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes

some more screenshots
connected to JF Chippy with fake FSR
connected with fake FSR copied and renamed to .FSU
FSFS picks up the flight plan
and appears to be connected properly and working as intended
when I click the 'unknown' radio button
and the aircraft folder
hope this helps

Something else I thought might be of use. Flight log of Aerosoft Catalina so you can see it does appear to monitor the flight correctly. This was using the FSU files - oh and I made a mistake before, I can't delete the fake FSR file, it has to be there for FSFS to see the FSU file. Weird but true

Aircraft: CONSOLIDATED ID: VH-PBZ Airline: Flight:
Flight plan: TO EGFF Cardiff:Cardiff NAV1: ICWA
Failure(s): None at landing
Failure Event(s) (Zulu Time): None
Failure Bonus:0% Flight Duration:00 Hours 19 Mins 11 Secs
Landing Score:26.85
Landing was successful in the following areas:
Gentle touchdown. [23 FPM]
Good landing speed - not too fast. [62 KIAS]
Wings were level.
Good pitch control after touchdown.
Good pitch at landing. [6 degrees]
Throttle(s) idle.
Good controlled final descent to touchdown.
Landing included the following problems:
Poor glideslope on ILS approach - you can do better. [0%]
Poor alignment with runway on ILS approach - line up and stay there. [0%]
Without flaps - use them for better glideslope and control at low speed.
Poor touch down heading.
Poor steering after landing - stay on the centre line.
Definite room for improvement...
Flight Score:109.90
Flight commended in the following areas:
Smooth turns.
Nice banking.
Correct matching of flaps to speeds.
Gear deployment at safe speed.
Comfortable G forces.
Smooth pitch control.
Flown within aircraft's maximum speed limit.
Gentle taxi turns.
Safe taxi speed.
Smooth braking during taxi.
Smooth climb during takeoff.
Wings level near ground.
Well coordinated turns.
No stalls.
No flying dangerously close to stall speed.
Smooth comfortable descent rate.
Pitch not too high.
Pitch not too low.
Flaps down on time.
Approach speed not too fast.
Low altitude speeds not too fast.
Good clearance of obstacles.
Flight included the following problems:
Braking during takeoff - watch those feet.
Poor steering during takeoff - maintain a constant heading.
Late rotation - when Vr is reached - take off.
Poor elevator control during taxi in wind - danger of flipping.
Poor aileron control during taxi in wind - danger of flipping.
Definite room for improvement...
edit: just to add that the Cat doesn't have flaps which is why they were not deployed on landing and also with the gauges and visibility of the Cat just hitting the tarmac is a good landing, centre line is asking a bit much... I'll take no critisism of a 23FPM and 62Kts touchdown
I'll also add that I'm having a ton of fun with FSFS!

Hi:
Thanks again for the feedback.
There appears to be an issue, under some circumstances, with FSX Steam Edition - but we have solved it.
Could you please download this new version of the program from here...
http://www.fsinventions.com/download/FSFlyingSchool_Pro_2015_v820.exe
...and simply rename your existing FSFlyingSchool.exe file to something else and then put this file in its place. You do not need to rename this new file.
Then quit all programs and launch FSX SE and get into one of those planes.
Then launch the program FSFlyingSchool_Pro_2015_v820.exe which you just downloaded. Note - please make sure you launch the one you downloaded and only after you put it into the FSFlyingSchool folder on your PC.
We've made a modification to the method it uses to find information on the plane - it should now work just as it always has for FSX, P3D and FS2004.
Please let me know how you get on!

Hi, thanks
I've tried 8.2 and it's the same I'm afraid, unknown aircraft with no FSR all fields are populated with 888s (JF Tiger Moth tested). With the ones I made the FSR files for they still put up the .cfg error if I click the 'unknown' radio button.
Thanks for the spoilers tip btw, I'll do that - I suspect it's to do with devs using features of the FS spoilers for other things, like when you kill the throttle in the Carenado Caravan with fine prop there's a very strong loss of speed and the instructor makes some comment about using speed brakes so I figured it was a little cheat in the aircraft code confusing FSFS.
I could try a reinstall but I'm guessing it's probably best to leave as is for now if you want to test some more things. I don't like fixing things with a re-install because even if it works you never know what the problem was.
Thanks again.
