Ole,

At its simplest, Mpanel is a compact hardware controller for aircraft radio, autopilot, gear and flap functions.  Over the course of a dozen sample flights, M Panel operated my stock Cessnas and 747s fine, as well as my F1 Skyhawk.

Though he gushed over the flap control & display as well as the landing gear control & display, my newly chatty Mr. Smith had little interest in Mpanel's autopilot functions.  "I'm a pilot, not an autopilot," he barked.  Then a thought crossed his face, "Except for looking at the Flight director switch, or possibly the altitude hold switch, or may the airspeed hold switch...." his voiced trailed off into a mumble.

Then he came back to reality when he looked at the radio functions. "I overlook COM except in case of emergencies, and Mpanel lets a pilot in trouble dial in the emergency frequency in a snap, or even to keep it on standby if they anticipate an engine fire or something like that."

"As for navigation and ILS, I like Mpanel's ability to let my students manage NAVs, DMEs and ADF as they would in a real stack.  Plus the ability to dial in the NAV1OBS and NAV2OBS headings when they're needed is super."  He pointed to the "000" value in the upper right of a DME view to show me where the associated OBS heading was displayed.  No more CRTL-SHIFT-D to know if I'm spot on the runway heading or so much as a degree off!

Then Smitty excused himself to go and buy a doctor an anniversary present or something.  Strange fellows....

Pros - Highly functional - a complete COM-NAV-ADF-DME-XPDR and autopilot package in one box.

Cons - Slight cosmetic build / design flaws detract somewhat.  The manual takes several reads to get a handle on the operations.  Doesn't look like "real aircraft controls."  The software that interfaces with FSUIPC could stand continued work.

Fenric

I'm a pilot, not an autopilot! Priceless. I love that. Smith does it again!

But seriously Fenric. Thank you for that summery of the M-panel. I see your points of pros and cons, and well I consider the ability to dial the knobs like you would for real, and having the OBS setting visible at all times, (if you select it of course) a real treat.

Definitely on my Wish-list

I've managed some elementary keymapping with M-Panel, so when I trip the red 4-way switch into User mode, the 5 black sub-mode buttons on the left side will emit SHIFT-CRTL-1 through SHIFT-CRTL-5, giving me all FSFS2009 commands via the panel.  (While in User mode, the rotary encoder controls pilot eye level up/down & reset, and the Square White Button starts & stops pushback.)

Since I have a gear selector with my Saitek switch panel, I hope to take enough time with FSUIPC and turn the M-Panel gear toggle into a fuel cutoff switch. (That is, if FUEL_SELECTOR_OFF does what I think....)

A nice little side to the programming is that I replaced the normal "connecting to FSX" marquee messages mainly to prove to myself that I was on the right track at times.  Pardon the bad lighting photos.

(I'll likely change that 2nd block of text to include a Burma Shave reference - the kids won't understand.)

Since Xmas is still aways off, do note that if you're interested in M-Panel - yet you like to fly heavies - VRInsight's MCP Combo Panel does all of this with plenty of buttons and switches and encoders galore.  I just went the cheap route.

I was this >< close to pulling the trigger on the microProPit, but a malware infestation of the missus' pc gave me the opportunity to claim it for a few weeks (post-cleanup) so I'm running Plan-G in a Simconnect setup and using its GPS panel as a poor man's substitute.  If this works out well, I may rebuild an old junker box to run it on a permanent basis and take a look at the microJetPit for (a) jet panels when I'm in a jet, and (b) to host the stock GPS panel and tach/fuel gauges when I'm in a prop.

Pity no PNW this Xmas....

What I want for Xmas is to be able to land properly after using this nice looking and sounding program (FS Flying School 2010) when my keys arrive

A member on the Just Flight forums recommended it, as I keep bursting tyres!

Merry Christmas!

1. After cleaning up a mess that the cook made with her laptop, I found a way to (inexpensively) duplicate the functionality of a specialized 425USD device.

2. However I'm still easily distracted by new and shiny things.

3. Too bad PNW didn't make it out by Xmas. [meh]

Happy Happy....
