Hi Big Moose, Biggles here,

A couple of pointers to help you get off to a good start on the S & S Tour.

Forgive me if you are already totally at home with the procedures. However, if you are not already used to creating flight plans on FSX and then entering them in FSFlyingSchool (fsfs), it would be an idea to check out the systems by;

Choosing  a short flight from A to B

Create the flight plan in FSX

Fire up fsfs and file the flight plan in fsfs

Fly the planned trip

After landing check that you have both a “Landing Score” and a “Flight Score” in fsfs.

All the necessary info is contained within the fsfs manual on page 13.

When happy with the above you are strongly advised to create individual non ILS runway (r/w) files (these are easy to make) and are preferable to the default FSX locations which would mean you have to land at the very edge/start of the r/w to get a good score.

By creating your own individual r/w files you can choose a more convenient “spot” to land eg r/w numbers, start of the tyre skid marks or other r/w markings – whichever suits you best.  We all have our own preferences. You will see that within your “Landing” debrief from fsfs there will be a “Distance From Touchdown Target” given

Typical end of flight debrief.

Biggles piloting SIAI-Marchetti SF.260 Left G-AERO ended 31 May 2009 at 11:31
FSFlyingSchool 2009 (May 12 2009)
Using: FSX
Visibility: 62.14 Miles     Wind: 8 Knots

Aircraft: SIAIMARCHETTI ID: GAERO Airline: Flight:
Flight plan: EGTP TO EGDG
NAV1:
Failure(s): None at landing
Failure Event(s) (Zulu Time): None
Failure Bonus:0% Flight Duration:00 Hours 10 Mins 19 Secs

Landing Score:42.20

Landing was successful in the following areas:

  • Good glideslope on visual approach.
  • Gentle touchdown.
  • Wings were level.
  • Distance from touchdown target (visual approach): 43 feet
  • Glideslope held until flare.
  • Good pitch control after touchdown.
  • Good pitch at landing.
  • With flaps - good job.
  • Throttle(s) idle.
  • Good controlled final descent to touchdown.

Landing included the following problems:

  • Poor alignment with runway on visual approach - line up and stay there.
  • Too fast - you had to force the plane to stay down.
  • Touch down not aligned with the runway - let's point down the runway.
  • Poor steering after landing - stay on the centre line.

Definite room for improvement...

Flight Score:87.61

Flight commended in the following areas:

  • Smooth turns.
  • Correct matching of flaps to speeds.
  • Gear deployment at safe speed.
  • Comfortable G forces.......etc

Any questions get back to us and don't forget to keep checking the competitions Forum pages for the latest gen.

Greetings Biggles,

Many thanks for the tips. I am practising ils approaches at the moment (Liverpool-Manchester, my local area).

I will have a go at visual approaches and making my own files and see how I go. I am on FS2004 so are there any differences/pitfalls I should be aware of, not being an FSX user?

Thanks again,

Big Moose

PS to my last post.

Any one know if it's possible to use flight plans generated by FS navigator as its my preferred tool of choice for planning?

Cheers again,

Big Moose

Big Moose - or can I call you 'Bullwinkle'...?

As long as FS2004 or FSX is happy with your flight plan - that's all that is required.

Having said that, I cannot recall any problems with any specific 3rd party flight planners and FSFS, but it could, I suppose, be theoretically possible that they could create something that pleases FS, but not FSFS.

But then, I could speculate all day... and often do...

Hi Big Moose

ILS approaches, wow, that is something Ole keeps telling me I should be able to do, so far I have resisted and been able to put up with his teasing.

I am not aware of any issues re fs2004/fsfs

Perhaps Ole or S/L could confirm this to be the case?

Guys:

Visual approaches with FSFS and FS2004 or FSX - both work great.

Go for those ILS approaches! In FS2004 or FSX - both work great.

There are few things on this Earth that approach the pure, delicious, succulent joy of flying in near zero visibility only to come out of it right over the darned runway as the ILS guides you down to a perfect, high scoring, landing.

Of course you can practice in clear skies too.

Being able to fly ILS brings a whole new layer of satisfaction to simming, so you should definitely add it to your simming plans.

Then - move on to... VOR navigation... this is where the real pilots live...

Take that darned GPS out of the cockpit and do things the hard (cool) way!

And yes - we are certainly looking at adding VOR navigation aspects to FSFS.
Be patient...

VOR in FSFS? This is great news SL.

VOR is one aspect in sim flying where I seem to hit a wall every time. Just havent nailed how its done altogether, even with looking through tutorials - half hearted I admit.

But its on top of my list of things to learn to perform, so PLEASE bring it on.

Ok S/L you've convinced me.

Great news about VOR, will look forward to that. It's old school, none of this cheating with GPS ( although I confess it's great when your lost and fuel is running low)

So ILS is on the agenda for AFTER the S&S Tour. Right now there is too much at stake.

So listen up all you Johnny-no-stars and no hopers the Tour is mine

Hi Big Moose

Great. I have a sneaking suspicion Big Moose is really a Dark Horse

If you have not already done so check out the freeware scenery that Ole posted yesterday?

Some of that Oz stuff is really good. I'll be posting details of freeware Singapore Intl scenery as soon as I can find it again
