Hi Paul:
I think it would be best to turn off the auto-detection of landing mode (if it is on) and make sure that you do not enter it until you are about to land.
The entry into landing mode is intended to indicate to your instructor that landing is imminent.
Also - FSFS is not aware of ATCs instructions to the pilot, but if you follow the above then it should not be much of an issue.

It is. You're probably right. Hopefully, Mr. Smith won't start freaking out when we start descending in cruise-mode.
From now on, I'll tell him we're landing only once we've turned onto final.
