Hi fellow sim pilots,

Squadron Leader asked me if I would show off my flight sim setup, so I thought I would obliged.  But then I thought, hey FSFlyingSchool pros, why don't we all show off our rigs, no matter how small or complicated your system. Here's mine.

Building up with Saitek gauges - Switch panel, comm's/nav's panel, Autopilot panel, MFD panel (goal is 5 more to complete the main instrument cluster), yoke, and rudder pedals.  And of course, can't fly without the FSFlyingSchool2013 Mr "Smitty" barking out how bad I'm flying! My goal someday is to build my own dedicated framework of a plane, and add a few more flying guages (GPS), and dedicated computer.  All dependant on wifey approval?

Looks GREAT Joe.... mostly just like my setup, with the exception of the darned Saitek Gauge, for which I havent gotten permission from she-who-must-be-obeyed - yet!

But with the Saitek Panel on top of the yoke - where on earth do you have your keyboard placed? I have all three Panels behind my yoke (I know its not perfect either, but I can still get at them), and you DO need to press an occational button on the keyboard once in awhile...

Ole:

Good probing questions - where does he put that keyboard...?

Good luck with the gauges and your capital expenditure request forms...

Hmmm... (thinking) how about if you and Joe get paid to write a review for a magazine, or something like that, and then you can explain to the budgetary authorities that the 6 gauges you need for your panel are "for work". Just a thought...

Sounds like a good plan Squadron Leader.... Would you please recommend us to Saitek for a review of a 6 gauges setup - with up keeping the gauges afterwards of course... Please???

Like JoeMini, I went with the Saitek setup. There are a few niggles with it but it works and it's a heck of a lot better than poking around a virtual cockpit trying to get a mouse in the right place.
I managed to save myself a fair amount of wonga by opting to use a tablet running X-PlaneRemote to display my standard six instruments and used one of the Saitek panels to display the HSI/ADF instruments.

The artificial horizon on the X-PlaneRemote application is utter pants. It does not display pitch information correctly - only ever displaying, at best, 50% of true deflection and maxing out at just over +/- 10 degrees. This can be overcome by switching the Saitek panel to the artificial horizon or using a HUD when necessary. As long as the weather is clear and the horizon is visible, who needs one anyway???

Having Mr.Smith accompanying me on flights has been a real help although he does tend to nag at inappropriate times and his habit of humming and whistling reminds me of a driving instructor I had many years ago.

That girl's getting a lead parachute, though !!! Next time she asks for an ice-cream, I'll drop her on an ice-cream van from 15,000ft if she wants one that much !

Nice rig Paul - and thanks for the insider information on some of the things to watch out for!

Can you tell us - what is it that Mr Smith is nagging about at inappropriate times? We are always interested to hear about areas we might be able to improve.

Also - and this is mainly for anyone else reading this - remember that the child voice can be turned off at the Background Humour checkbox of the Pilots Screen. Some folks love it - others don't. It's an option.

Can you tell us - what is it that Mr Smith is nagging about at inappropriate times?

Nothing too serious. It's times such as when I've approached an airport too close to the runway threshold and have had to turn away (I know, not really proper flying procedure) and he's telling me to line up on the centre-line...
Or... I climbed out of one airport, saw another below me and decided to land... Before he realised that we were attempting a landing (auto-detection mode was on), he was telling me not to lose height after take-off. I know that I could have manually informed him that I was going to attempt a landing.

I've also discovered that my logbook reports are showing that I need to reduce the throttle to idle before touchdown. I do but I am still getting the warning. Perhaps I'm not doing it soon enough but If I do it any sooner, I'll stall and pancake onto the runway.

Also - and this is mainly for anyone else reading this - remember that the child voice can be turned off at the Background Humour checkbox of the Pilots Screen. Some folks love it - others don't. It's an option.

Oh. don't get me wrong. I don't dislike it and know that it can be turned off... I know it's part of the humour and appreciate it for what it is... We're not really supposed to like her complaining about wanting ice-cream or the bathroom, are we????

Hi:

OK - so we understand why the instructor is saying what he is saying.

As to the throttle - this is not a common issue.

This could very likely be due to the PC's flight controls. Some controls do not register as cut off even when all the way at the end of their axis of movement. We can test this - if you completely cut the throttle with the keyboard... and if that solves the issue... then it is the PC's flight controls and we can explore that further.

He's nagging me to line up with the centre-line again... Every few seconds.
I've just been given descent instructions from 15,000ft and haven't even reached 11,500 yet !!!!
Now I've been told to change heading by ATC and he's still nagging me. Jeeeeeeeeez... Mr. S ! Gimme a break. I'll do what ATC tell me to do and I'll line up when it's time to do so and not before !!!
