Hi,
I would like some advice please. Having now flown 5 'test' flights in FSFlyingSchool 2011 each flight has one thing in common. Consistently shockingly bad landing scores!

I know that a poor workman always blames his tools, and so I don't want to be guilty of that, but in FSFlyingSchool 2009 although I could be a little inconsistant with my landings, I have achieved a high score of 105 and would often get landing scores of 90 or above.
On three occasions I was logged as landing off of the runway surface, when in fact I landed well over the threshold, even if not precisely on the centre line.
Here is my last log book entry for my last flight:
Aircraft: Cessna ID: N9COF Airline: Flight:
Flight plan: EGDC TO EGTE : NAV1:
Failure(s): None at landing
Failure Event(s) (Zulu Time): None
Failure Bonus:0% Flight Duration:00 Hours 22 Mins 50 Secs

Landing Score:21.10

Landing was successful in the following areas:

* Gentle touchdown. [89 FPM]
* Good landing speed - not too fast. [45 KIAS]
* Wings were level.
* Distance from runway threshold (visual approach): [659 feet]
* Glideslope held until flare.
* Good pitch control after touchdown.
* Good pitch at landing.
* With flaps - good job.
* Heading aligned with runway.
* Throttle(s) idle.
* Good controlled final descent to touchdown.
* Good steering after landing.

Landing included the following problems:

* Poor glideslope on visual approach - you can do better. [40%]
* Poor alignment with runway on visual approach - line up and stay there. [0%]
* Landed off runway surface.

Definite room for improvement...

Flight Score:102.37

Flight commended in the following areas:

* Smooth turns.
* Nice banking.
* Correct matching of flaps to speeds.
* Comfortable G forces.
* Smooth pitch control.
* Flown within aircraft's maximum speed limit.
* Gentle taxi turns.
* Good take off steering.
* Rotation was not late.
* Appropriate position of flaps during taxi.
* Safe taxi speed.
* Smooth braking during taxi.
* Smooth climb during takeoff.
* Wings level near ground.
* Well coordinated turns.
* No stalls.
* No flying dangerously close to stall speed.
* Smooth comfortable descent rate.
* Pitch not too high.
* Pitch not too low.
* Flaps down on time.
* Approach speed not too fast.
* Low altitude speeds not too fast.
* Good clearance of obstacles.

A smooth flight!

FSFlyingSchool 2011 promised: "No need to land on a fixed point on the runway.Any reasonable landing on a runway will get a reasonable score." So far this has not been my experience! Since flying this version of FSFlyingSchool, I am getting the landing scores of a complete novice!
Before I hang up my flying helmet and seek some kind of behavioral therapy please tell me what's going on!

I am no computer expert, but could there be some glitch caused by me downloading the full version of FSFlyingSchool 2011 without removing 2009 first?
I had another score in the mid-twenties for a landing that was 360 ft from the threshold. The 2009 version required a landing to be made precisely at the start of the tarmac and one of the reasons why I bought the 2011 version, was because I wanted to be able to land at a more realistic point on the runway and to be able to rely on the runway lights to guide me in.
It seems as if FSFlyingSchool 2011 wants contact with the runway in the same place as the 2009 version.
I have already made an appointment for the therapist. I have a serious case of LRT (Landing Related Trauma)

Here is another strange one:

FSFlyingSchool 2011 (Dec 03 2010)
Using: FS2004
Visibility: 150.88 Miles Wind: 0 Knots

Aircraft: Cessna ID: N9COF Airline: Flight:
Flight plan: EGDC TO EGTE : NAV1:
Failure(s):
Electrical System inop for 666 secs, still inop

Failure Event(s) (Zulu Time):
Failure: Z04:18:25 Electrical System

Failure Bonus:15% Flight Duration:00 Hours 21 Mins 14 Secs
Landing Score:27.26

Landing included the following problems:

* Poor alignment with runway on visual approach - line up and stay there. [0%]
* Landed off runway surface.
* Without flaps - use them for better glideslope and control at low speed.
* Poor steering after landing - stay on the centre line.

# Flaps not down on time - plan your landing next time.
# Poorly trimmed aircraft - trimmers are there to help: use them.

How could I use the trimmers & flaps when there was a complete electrical failure? I would have thought that making an acceptable landing in those circumstances would have scored much higher.

Note the 'Landed off runway surface' despite that: Distance from runway threshold (visual approach): [1558 feet]
I actually landed much further down the runway than normal, because I was approaching at a slightly higher speed, (no flaps or trimmers!)

Something weird is going on here!

Hi MJ:

Sorry for the delay - thanks for trying FSFS2011.

The puzzle we have here is that FSFS thinks you are landing off the runway surface and is hacking a bunch of points off your score because of that.

You've mentioned that you are landing ON the runway surface and so we need to figure out why MrSmith et al are convinced that you are not.

This has been reported to us by a tiny minority of users and so it follows that there are rare cases where this can happen and we need to sift the clues and find why that is.

The most obvious reason would be that MrSmith simply has no idea what you are doing because you are not lined up with the runway when on final, in landing mode and dropping below 500 feet AGL.

But... this would not appear to be the case in at least landings which show a "localizer" rating as those are only shown if MrSmith has something to compare your approach with - they are not show if he has no idea where you are going.

As always - there are so many different configs of FSX - we need to ask some questions.

1. Can you try an ILS landing and report back with results?

2. Are you landing at add-on scenery?

3. Did you successfully generate the FSFS2011 runway data?

4. What were the runways you landed at, at EGTE that produced these "off runway" results?

5. Can you try some more visual landings at a different airport and report back with results?

Please let me know how you get on.

Hi SL,

I have tried an ILS landing, but that produced similar results, I do not have any add on scenery and I did generate the FSFS2011 Runway data, but I would have thought that once this had been done, the 'Generate Runway Data' button would 'fade out', to show that the information was loaded and no longer required, but this does not happen.

I landed on runway 08 at EGTE in a Cessna 182.

I have uninstalled FSFS2011 at the moment, and am happily flying with Mr Smith in FSFS2009! Can I re-install FSFS2011 and have both versions available, so that I do not have to keep re-installing FSFS2009?

Hi -

Thanks for your feedback.

How about if we do this?

Can you copy and paste the first 1000 lines of text from the runway file that FSFS2011 creates and stores in your FSX folder and email it to

support@FSFlyingSchool.com

Next - we will send you FSFS2010 so that you can enjoy all of its features, including recognition of other traffic, etc, while we are sorting this out.

Just install it in a totally separate folder and you will have no problems.

Hi SL,

I thought that the problem had been solved as I got a much better landing score, but since then I had another 'Landed off Runway surface' when I actually landed on the runway.

See next post.
