if you install Windows 7, the installation process will ask you if you want to keep your old Windows installation (and all its folders and programs(--Vista in your case). If if you answer Yes, then the new nstallation of Win 7 will keep all you have in your C (including all the folders and program in Program Files and all your Documents folder) in a new folder named "Windows.old", so you do not have to make a backup. I run my FS9 still from that folder when I changed from Vista to Windows 7, and did not have to reinstall it. Then I chose what I wanted from Documents and C and deleted the rest.
That was some help by Windows 7 and very thoughtful of Microsoft to include that option.
