Having recently purchased the software and received my registration key, I have just made 2 ILS approaches to my local airport (Manston, EGMH). Although I landed on the runway successfully both times, FSFlyingSchool claims that I crashed on both occasions and no log was created to give any further information. Can anybody please tell me why this should happen? I have searched this forum, but cannot find any relevant posts. Dave.

Dave: Welcome to the Forum! >> Although I landed on the runway successfully both times, FSFlyingSchool claims that I crashed on both occasions and no log was created to give any further information. No log will be created if FSFS thinks the flight ended in a crash - so in that sense, FSFS is doing its job correctly. You mentioned that "FSFlyingSchool claims that I crashed". Can you tell me how this is communicated to you? Did FSFS say: "From where I'm sitting it looks like you've crashed the plane..." or "Well you flew the plane so badly even I couldn't stop you from crashing it..." or is the 'crash' announcement only made in text in the log page page of the FSFS appplication? Let me know and we'll continue our investigation.

Hello Squadron Leader, Thank you for the welcome, and the prompt response. Mr.Smith announced "From where I sit ....." I then moved to the FSFlying School screen, which showed that the program had disconnected because I had crashed. Although I have been known to crash occasionally, I don't think he should have access to this information from previous flights. Another thing .... when he says "What's that smell ?", is that some kind of comment on my flying ? Dave.

Dave: "From where I'm sitting it looks like you've crashed the plane..." This is generated when FSFS attempts to figure out if, although Flight Sim has not declared a crash, the plane is in no condition to fly, due most likely to a hard landing. In this state FS cuts the engine and there's nowhere to go except restarting the flight and so the instructor in FSFS calls time on the flight and treats it like a full blown crash (which usually causes FS to restart the flight). I like to call this state "wrecked" rather than "crashed". I have no reports of this occuring at incorrect times, but the program is, in the end, attempting to infer when this has occured - it does not know for sure. It is triggered by the aircraft being on the ground and pointed at some absurd angle towards either the ground or the sky, etc. Does any of this ring true? As to "What's that smell?" there are several theories about what causes those instructors to ask this question. These range from electrical shorts to an excess of green vegetables at the airfield cafe.

Squadron Leader, I would say that none of those things applied in either of the 2 landings. They may not have been text-book, but in both cases I landed on the runway in control and at a reasonable speed, and gently braked to a halt near the centre-line. No way did FSX think that the flight was ended abruptly. Dave.

Dave: You've been bumped up to Frequent Flyer - you can post without external moderation. This is a proper puzzle - as I said we've had no problems with this logic before. I'd like to suggest you try a landing in a different aircraft - just so we can get some more data in play to base our investigation on. Which aircraft have you landed in so far?

Frequent Flyer .... cool - do I get air miles ? The landings were both done in the default Cessna - I will have a try with the RealAir SF260, and see if that makes any difference. Will report back ... Dave.

Dave: Well... you'll get lots of points for good flights and landings... (once we sort out this issue!) Perhaps you could try a different airfield too - there may be something unique about EGMH...?

Squadron Leader, I took out the SF260 and landed at the same airport. Although the flight scored very poorly, I got a touchdown rather than a crash - my previous landings in the Cessna were rather better. So I took the Cessna up again, had a short flight and landed with no problem ....... My scores were 76.70 for the landing, and 100.65 for the flight. I have no idea why the earlier attempts ended the way they did, but in the event that it happens again, I will let you know. Thanks for your input, Dave.
