Does FSFS 2010 work with VATSIM and Squawkbox 4? If I'm connected to VATSIM using SB4 and I load up FSFS 2010, when I hit connect I get a crash message from FSFS saying that there's a problem with the sound card being changed in the settings (even though it hasn't) and FSFS exits.

If I shut down SB4 thereby disconnecting it from VATSIM FSFS 2010 loads, connects, and operates fine.

We find the best approach to add-ons, of which there are so many, in different versions and which perform differently on 3 versions of Windows with 2 versions of Flight Simulator (not to mention service packs)... is to advise that you try the free demo and see what results you get.

Thanks for posting your results to the forum - it all helps the Flight Simulator community.

We are not aware of any add-ons that FSFS categorically will not work with, but fully accept that it may not work well with some.

Good luck with your project.

So I guess that means nobody has reported having trouble getting FSFS 2010 to work with Squawkbox 4? And btw, I already paid for FSFS 2010. I can live with using it offline, but I'd prefer not to.

Nothing specifically about Squawkbox in any version, but we did have one user who had some problems with VATSIM. You can search this forum for VATSIM to see the trail of posts.

There are so many potential variables involved here - such as versions of Windows, versions of 3rd party add-ons, multiple sound cards, USB headphones, etc  that we simply advise that folks try the demo, rather than insisting that FSFS works or does not work with this or that.

Thanks for purchasing our product - we hope you enojoy it!

Well here's some more info for you that may help you figure out what's causing this problem.

With Squawkbox 4 running and it's audio devices set to "wave xyz sound card" (whatever sound card you have....in my case it's a Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme Audio) FSFlyingSchool will start, but won't connect to flight simulator. I get an error about the sound card changing even though it hasn't, as I reported above.

But if I set SB4 audio devices to "Direct Sound ..." then FSFlyingSchool is able to start and connect to Flight Simulator X. The only problem is that it then randomly crashes out anywhere from a few seconds later to a few minutes later. I've yet to be able to even finish my takeoff sequence before FSFS crashes out. Same error as always. Sometimes it crashes right as soon as I hit connect. Other times it takes a few minutes. But it always crashes.

That help any?

It sounds like this is all about... sound.

It sounds like(?) there is a conflict between SB4 and FSFS when FSFS tries to play an audio file - but not every time.

Presumably there are times when FSFS can get away with playing a WAV file without butting heads with SB4 and there are times when this will cause a problem.

Sadly, at present we have no advice on how to get around this issue.

As a last resort I guess you can always try switching off the sound in FSFS when using SB4 - you will not hear an instructor  but you will at least get a flight evaluation.

How do you turn the sound off in FSFS 2010? I don't see that option. If that doesn't work I may try turning on my onboard sound chip on my motherboard and have FSFS use that while everything else uses my Soundblaster sound card. That SHOULD solve the conflict.

You can put a gag order on your instructors by turning on the checkbox at...

(In FSFS)

Pilots Screen... Sound Setup... Disable Sound

Thanks. I'll keep messing with things to see if I can get it all to work.

Just an update on this issue. I switched my computer so it's using the onboard sound chip instead of my Soundblaster and everything works fine together now.

Creative has long been known for putting out inferior drivers for their cards. Their sound cards are good, but their drivers are not.
