I'm new (but licensed FSFS owner) trying to get the non-ILS figured out. I want to fly circuits to my local airport KSLE (Salem Oregon) and the LAT LONG coordinates are zero for one of them, so I used a 'double zero' to represent both digits being zero, is this right or wrong? 34,340,N44_54_12,W123_00_21,3,SALEM.KSLE Second question: I want to fly circuits, so therefor I don't set a flightplan right? Will the 'no glideslope' information ever go away when landing at Non-ILS runways? I assume my rather low score at non-ILS runways are related to my improper configuration? Any extra guidance is appreciated, the manual doesn't cover the non-ILS circuits much. Thanks, -Brendan

Brendan: Welcome to the forum! 34,340,N44_54_12,W123_00_21,3,SALEM.KSLE Single or double zeros are fine. >> Second question: I want to fly circuits, so therefor I don't set a flightplan right? Will the 'no glideslope' information ever go away when landing at Non-ILS runways? I assume my rather low score at non-ILS runways are related to my improper configuration? Any extra guidance is appreciated, the manual doesn't cover the non-ILS circuits much. 1. You always need to load a flight plan into FSFS if you are flying to a non-ILS runway. FSFS uses this information to compute whether you are lined up with the runway and if you are following the published glideslope for that runway. 2. If you do this - you will have 'glideslope' information at the runway and you will be able to score big points. Having said this, flying is always more precise in FSFS when perfoming an ILS approach, because FSFS and FS agree on the glideslope without question. It is our experience that when flying non-ILS approaches, the visual signals from the runway, such as PAPI or VASI lights, may not always agree with the published glideslope for the runway. This has the effect that the instructor knows what the published glideslope is, but the lights in FS are telling you to do something else! In general this is not the case. Just follow the lights and you should stay pretty close to the GS - but always listen to your instructor - in FSFS he is not looking at the lights (we can't read their data) and it is his decision which is final.

So for flying a flightplan in a circuit, are both airports set to my airport in the flightplan? the Official glideslope for KSLE is 3, so if I specify 3 in the nonILS folder file, as shown above, will it use that sine there's no ILS? Tell me this, for my own better understanding - does FSFS use the airport name (KSLE) in the flightplan to 'look up' the correct LAT/LONG/RUNWAY/GLIDESLOPE in the NonILS folder? Thanks, ~Brendan

>> So for flying a flightplan in a circuit, are both airports set to my airport in the flightplan? Yes - that's how FSFS works. >> the Official glideslope for KSLE is 3, so if I specify 3 in the nonILS folder file, as shown above, will it use that sine there's no ILS? It will use that. >> Tell me this, for my own better understanding - does FSFS use the airport name (KSLE) in the flightplan to 'look up' the correct LAT/LONG/RUNWAY/GLIDESLOPE in the NonILS folder? Precisely. That's why it needs a flight plan loaded into FSFS. It needs to know where you are going. Flying in "circuit mode" is processed separately from all of this - it does not replace the requirements FSFS has when flying to non-ILS runways, i.e. to load a flight plan.

Even with the file in the nonILS folder, I'm getting 'zero points for glideslope' and the following information:Landing included the following problems: * No glideslope information was available on visual approach. * No runway alignment information was available on visual approach. * No glideslope - could not compare flare to glideslope. Definite room for improvement... What am I doing wrong since i have a flightplan loaded (Ctrl-Shift-D varifies this by announcing KSLE to KSLE) but it tells me 'zero points for glidescope' etc. ~Brendan

If the file you created and placed into the nonILS folder is working properly, you should be able to select the runway you are flying to when you load your flight plan into FSFS. Is this happening? Are you able to select your destination runway?

yes, it is loading the correct file - i can even change the heading and the Flight Plan page changes accordingly. He does say 'lets get down to the glideslope' and I've gotten as high as 36 points on the glideslope. but it's way below the PAPI..... is there any way to 'dial this in'? AirNav.com shows KSLE as 3degree which is how I set it in the filename. Should I change the LAT/LONG that's being used etc? Also, another related question - when doing circuits, on the downwind, he auto-switches to cruising, and then while maintaining 1000ft AGL he complains I'm too low...... so: should I just ignore this and turn to base, or should I be MANUALLY advancing to landing mode? Thanks for your time, ~Brendan

I don't know if your LAT/LONG coordinates are correct - please be sure that they come from the reading when the aircraft is on the numbers or whatever spot you picked in FSX. Do not use real world data as it may not agree with FSX. The FSX PAPI may be pointing at a GS other than 3 degrees. This is what I mentioned earlier. You'd have to play with the GS specified on the nonILS file to attempt to get it to match. >> Also, another related question - when doing circuits, on the downwind, he auto-switches to cruising, and then while maintaining 1000ft AGL he complains I'm too low...... so: should I just ignore this and turn to base, or should I be MANUALLY advancing to landing mode? You still have to advance flight modes while doing circuits in FSFS. However - note that you can turn off the auto-detection of cruise and landing if you want more precise control over it. Let us know how you get on.

I think I spotted one of my problems - runway 34 PAPI actually has a different glideslope than the other runways.More importantly, the manual says "NAV1 OBS should be set to the runway heading". Should that be '34' or should that be '344', the true heading of the runway? Thanks, I think that will get me set for a bit. ~B

Should that be '34' or should that be '344', the true heading of the runway? The exact heading - if it is 344 then you set it to 344. Press Ctrl + Shift + D to have FSFS show you what NAV1 OBS it is currently set to. >> Thanks, I think that will get me set for a bit. Go for it!
