First, congratulations on your new 2009 release. I am very keen to try it out. Which brings me to my second point....
I have installed FSFS 2009 on Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Regardless of running FS2004 or FSX (I have both installed) I get a run-time error -2147467259 (unable to play the file on the device) as soon as I hit the connect button. FSFS then exits.
I had this same problem with the "old" FSFS version. I have tried the demo version for both.
Other posts in the forum show other people with this problem. Some suggestion it is audio related or skype. Skype was not running, but I uninstalled it anyways. Same problem, no change. I don't think my sound hardware is unusual. No USB headset. Creative X-Fi soundcard.
I would be grateful for any ideas on how to resolve the problem, thank you.

See my post just after yours. I think its the same error you're getting. Not sure what the problem is or what causes it, but without my USB headset in and a regular one plugged in for VATSim, I'm doing ok.

Thanks for your reply. Glad you got your problem sorted. However, as I mentioned, I am not using a USB headphone (or Skype) so am doubly puzzled by the problem I am experiencing. Quite Frustrating! What soundcard are you using?

Hi there - thanks for your interest in FSFS. This issue is always (as I recall) due to sound in some way. Either non-standard hardware or software. USB equipment, Skype, WinAMP, Voip, Camtasia, FRAPS, etc. Does this ring any bells?

I'm still testing on a couple long/short flights with different aircraft. So far it looks like its my usb headset that I enjoy using on vatsim flights. I like it because I can have the FSX atc come through the headset and not my speakers when flying on line. With this headset out, I just have to turn the FSX atc down.
Still, even with this little problem, its a great program and I am enjoying using it.

The following information will help us debug the problem: * Open Control Panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel) * Open "Sounds and Audio Devices" * Select the "Voice" tab * How many devices are listed under "Voice playback"? Can you list them?

I am glad the qwplots has resolved his issue - clearly the USB headset was the culprit, but my issue remains. I will repeat, I have no USB headset and I continue to get this frustrating run-time error. I un-installed Skype - still run-time error. I concluded that the Speech Recognition software on Vista might be incompatible so disabled it. There is only one difference. I now get a verbal notification when the software connects with Flight Sim (FS2004 or FSX). Never heard the verbal connect message before. So clearly sound works. However, once I alt-tab back to Flight Sim and unpause the run-time error occurs. It appears it may occur *after* it identifies the plane I am using. Is there any log/error file that I can send to you? Any suggestions I would be truly appreciate. One final comment. I had access to a very similar system (hardware), but running WinXP (not Vista). For comparison I installed a virgin copy of FS2004 and tried the 2009 demo. It worked fine. Is there a possibility of some incompatibility with an add on? On my system, I am using the new Traffic X with FSX. Any thoughts?

I can say that it is not Traffic X. I use Traffic X also, with XP and FSX acc. No problems for me.

Can you give us the data John asked for in post 2962? That will help. There must be something unique about the PC configuration. Side note - Just to be clear (for the benefit of anyone reading this now or in future) the issue is not Vista itself. FSFS has been running with Vista all over the world for ages.
