I think that the Carenado C172 and FSFlyingSchool with the detail pack are an excellent match. I am only having one problem which I can't seem to correct. I follow the ILS down to the runway just fine and keep my eyes on the end of the runway to make sure I am landing right down the middle. Yet with each landing the plane moves over to the left no matter how much correction I use with the rudder. It's the only problem keeping my score down. Should I try taping the right brake? I would like to get passed this problem before I challenge my self further with circuits and adding wind. I'm using the Microsoft sidewinder stick with force feedback which works well enough until I fork over the cash for a yoke and pedals. Any suggestions?

I regularly use both the Carenado 152II and the 172 and can confirm this is not an issue with the aircraft or with FS Flying School, they're not bad and I've been using them to practice flight exercises with.

Before looking into issues with your hardware, are you absolutely certain there's no crosswind ? Try using shift Z (twice) to show extended details which include the wind strength and direction to check for crosswind effect. For example, if a crosswind exists from the right, remember you'll have to use left rudder to line the nose up for the landing, but also right aileron to maintain centerline tracking.

If this is the cause, it could be awkward to resolve accurately with the joystick.....much easier with a flight yoke.

MarshallT has given some good advice and I will add this...

... the crosswind is very important of course - try it first with perfectly clear weather and add more wind later.

I can speak about the MS SW with force feedback. I love it for combat but dropped it very soon for the type of precision flying that the FSFS instructors want to see. The force feedback just gets in the way and it is, in my experience, just not that precise. A simple joystick without FF is better, but note that if you simply turn off the FF unit, the MS SW stick is not like a normal stick of course as it has no natural center - it flops about everywhere.

We've had great results with simple inexpensive sticks - just cannot recommend FF. A yoke is much better (but more money of course) and if you can get pedals one day you will love them.

Thanks for the replies. I am still having to struggle with keeping the plane tracking straight down the center line after landing. I set up FSX with NO WIND and I'm getting pretty high scores for the rest of the flight. I switched to the Carenado C152 and I tried holding the nose wheel off the runway as long as possible along with full flaps. I still can't track straight even with rudder corrections and a tap of differential braking. I know my approach and landing are straight, but keeping it rolling that way is making me crazy. I want to get the highest scores I can before adding wind and moving up to more complex planes. I realize that the problem is not with FS Flying School, but I wonder how others have solved the problem. I'm sorely tempted to upgrade so I can get the C152 detail pack, but not until I manage to understand what I'm doing wrong with FSX. Thanks in advance.

I wonder if somehow the rudder control of the joystick device is causing a problem?

You could try setting FSX to "auto-rudder" (a setting in FSX) where the rudder is linked to the ailerons - you have less control and it is less realistic but it could be worth testing.

I continue to struggle with rolling out down the center of the runway after landing.  I saved an approach and I keep working on the problem.  I have had a few perfect landings by dropping the last notch of flaps just prior to crossing the thresh hold.  I found that if I land slow enough and right down the middle while keeping the nose wheel up as long as possible I get what I want.  My roll out is right down the middle. As yet I can't quite repeat perfection with every landing so I'm still limited to no wind.  My log books says I was late with flaps, but I drop the first two notches of flaps right after starting to descend. 

If all that sounds like a complaint, it wasn't meant to be.  Your program has brought me hours of pleasure.  I highly recommend it.  FSX is great fun, but with your software I get much more satisfaction with every flight.  Your software has increased my desire to head to a real airport for some actual flight instruction.

Hi FSXCOP...... with regards to the C152, I think its probably your hardware unless you're landing far to fast and there's some type of yaw effect coming in to play. I fly both the Carenado 152 and 172 and definitely do not have the issue you are experiencing, here's how I land the C152....

When on downwind and turning onto base, carburettor heat on, reduce throttle to 1500rpm (maintaining altitude typically 1000ft), then when airspeed drops below 80 apply 20 degrees of flaps and trim to maintain 70 knots (you will need to lower the nose when you drop the flaps otherwise you'll balloon). When you turn onto final, carburettor heat off, and place the nose of the aircraft an inch below the piano keys on the threshold.... trim and maintain 65 knots adjusting rpm as necessary, lower the flaps to 30 degrees late final, re-trim, maintain 63-65 knots and use rudder only to align with the center line. As the threshold disappears from sight, set throttle to idle and apply back pressure to control the sink all the way down onto the tarmac. ..... all going to plan, the landing should be sweet !!

Thanks for the help Marshall. Having set up an ILS approach and save it, I was able to practice landing over and over and over until I got it right! Holding on to the sidewinder loosely helped as did lining up the runway with the hump in the top of the panel, (Carenado c152). About the only criticism I find on the log book is that I am late extending flaps. As soon as I notify the instructor that I intend to land, I drop 2 notches of flaps. I don't use the third notch so I don't know why I still find that in my log book.

Regardless of my small problem with the log book, I really enjoy using your program. How do I go about purchasing an upgrade from FSFS 11 to FSFS Pro? I want it to include the C152 detail pack as well. Cheers!
