I'm giving real thought to switching to X Plane 9. Read a lot of reviews. Experienced in all microsoft flight simulator iterations (started with FS 98) To anybody that has switched from FSX, any thoughts or comments?

Jplast001 (Interesting name.... ;-) )

Brave thoughts you have there. Being a long running MSFlight simulator guy myself, X-Plane keeps me in its grasp, nomatter how I try to slid out of it.

X-Plane or FSX? It´s mostly religion I think... Like Liverpool or Manchester U, or like Corona or Heinekin....

I have also used FS since FS98 and stumbled over X-Plane back in V.7x I tried all demoversions throughout v.8, and then in V.9 I got an offer I couldnt refuse. $29 for X-Plane 9, inclusive world wide shipping. So I bought it.

After a month I thought I was a World Champion of X-Plane, and made a review of a payware version of the DHC-2 Beaver for X-Plane v.9.5+. I am very glad I did that. The review was a disaster. The people I did it for, refused to post it, and told me in harsh language that I didnt know that the h*** I was talking about. I was furious, I was mad, I was.... sad. I knew from what they said, that they were absolutely right. I did not know a fraction of what I needed to know about X-Plane - yet. (Some of the points they made actually made me much wiser that I had even been about X-Plane so it was good in retrospect)

Still X-Plane kept me close. And then I did one thing that I liked a lot. I dedicated 3 months exclusively for X-Plane. No FSX at all, and that helped a lot.
And then FSFlyingSchool suddenly wanted to create FSFS for X-Plane. This is of course as good as the invention of sliced bread. FSFlyingSchool helped me SO much in my piloting abilities for MSFlight Simulator. So the possibility to do that also, in X-Plane is so good.

X-Plane is different from FSX. The planes behave differently. That is one of the things that kept me leaving X-Plane for years, but after I did my first real-life flight, I found that X-Plane aircraft behave pretty good. And now Carenado are creating aircraft for X-Plane so life is good.

In X-Plane you have no airport buildings at all (save for the default startup airport of course, they need to have something for show, but apart from that, you have correct airport layouts, but no buildings... THAT takes some getting used to. Luckily you can get addons for a lot or airports, a lot freeware at the org (thats xplane.org) and also a lot of payware.... in different quality.

Creating flightplans are also harder than in FSX, but they have the most wonderful lighting systems - you can turn cockpit lights up and down in graduation, and the day/night system (changing time) is Fantastic. You just change time and are back INSTANTLY - no delays at all, no reloading like in FSX.

And once you get used to the way the (good) planes behave in X-Plane, it feels great and very lifelike.

The steepest learning curve, if you ask me, is that everything needs to be set - in a totally different manner than in FSX, but again, once you get that under your skin, its often easier than FSX.

I will conclude by saying that X-Plane is harder to master than FSX, but the reward when you master it, is great.

I look very much forward to X-plane v10 (and to new hardware if the needed specs are anything like what the rumors say...) I think X-Plane will enter the competition for the top notch Flight sim seriously with V10.

But I still use FSX 70% of the time. Why? because I know everything by heart, and I have a shitload of addons for FSX..... and I still love FSX, and you know, real love never dies

And...

remember that FSFS is available for X-Plane 9 (PC version).
This version even includes captions for the hearing impaired.

And...

the FSFS Voice Pack is also available for X-Plane 9 (PC version).
