Came home from work today, and found a small package on the dining table, from my wife.

I opened the package, and inside was a gift certificate to an adventure pack. In my case, a "Pilot for a day" gift certificate.

So May 8´th, I go to Roskilde airport and get a briefing on the basics of flight - and then I will be in the left seat of a C172, and will perform taxiing to the rwy, get clearance, take off, fly around for 20 minutes (I know, its not long - but I bet it will be intense) and then land the darn thing myself - unless I screw up things, in which case my copilot will take over and get us down (I hope)

So time to see if all the Simflying has paid off. My heart is beating like a drum, just thinking of it.

God, I love that woman.

Cool! What a woman!

OK - some hot tips from SL...

Remember when taxiing - keep your darned hands off the yoke (unless windy) - you are not driving.

When you take off be ready to use plenty of right rudder to keep her straight.

When climbing - look at the way the horizon relates to the nose of the plane and use that to keep you at the correct pitch.

Probably the single most dangerous thing you can do is STALL!   So keep your speed up. It's far better to go too fast than too slow.

When you are landing - look out the window! You don't need to read the darned altimeter to see that you are getting close to the ground.

Look at the far end of the runway - good for getting lined up.

And most of all...

... pay attention to your instructor!

P.S. Take lots of pictures of you and the plane!

John: Ill do my very best.

SL: Thanks for all the advice. Makes me feel even more giddy, and also a little nervous, as all your advice make it seem so real - and a trifle dangerous also....

But God hates a coward, and who would I be, to not have this experience. Ill print out your list SL, and keep it in my breastpocket on May 8´th.

Ole

Excellent - that's the spirit!

Oh - just remembered - trim, trim, trim. You cannot trim too much.

There's an easy reminder for this: If your knuckles are white - you need to trim.

And... "Watch out for other traffic!" just like Smitty says.

Awesome Ole!  What a wifey!

I've done a few flights myself...and it's amazing.  I did mine in the heat of the summer, I was a soaking mess after it was all over!

I think I sweated out all water in me that day!  Ha Ha

Same here Joe - most of my flights were in very warm California weather.

One time, the instructor accepted the controls from me, as he had told me that he would, in order to take us to a new area, and pulled a very steep turn which caught me totally unwares.

He apologized profusely later, especially because his turn made me throw up all over my nice Piper Cherokee...

We returned to the airport and while I washed up as best I could in the bathroom, he cleaned up all my vomit.

Later - I had to walk into a clothing store in my 'vomit shirt' and buy an new one - with a straight face...

All part of the adventure of flight!

Anyway - I stuck at it and 'solo-ed' and had a great time.

So Ole - consider your breakfast very carefully!

Thanks Joe... I´m sure that nomatter how hot or cold it might be, on May 8´th, I´ll have a body temperature of about 39.2 c. and the yoke is probably gonna have grooves from my fingers. Unless I can remember SL´s advice to trim, trim and trim whenever my fingers are white.

SL. Beautiful story - Too bad "Readers Digest" is dead, or it would have suited a front-page story there. I can see the cover picture of the aircraft in an insane bank, and the pilot with his face pressed aginst the side window - vommiting like a spray painter in a carpainters working space.

The headline: "Student pilot evades death after instructor goes insane"

Subheader... "He tried to kill us both - the heroic pilot said - after getting the aircraft down safely"

                                                                                            Fright flight

Chapter 1

It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Mourningville, California. A postcard summer day in fact. Not a cloud in sight. Even the wind was dead calm. Perfect conditions for flying. And flying was todays game.

Student pilot Dan Pine (name changed) was about to have his third lesson in his own Piper Cherokee, an aircraft he had recently inherited from his late uncle in pennesylvania. Dan was very excited, and when his usual flightinstructor wasent the one Dan found in the right side of his aircraft, Dan only smiled. This was a common thing, he knew. And besides, Dan was the one to do the flying. The instructor needed not touch the controls at all. Dan was confident. He never thought he was going to be a pilot, but after his dear uncle, Patrick Moseby - Buzz Lightyear to his friends, Dan had no idea why, had passed away in a motorcycle accident, leaving Dan his small Piper, Dan had suddenly seen the possibilities in becoming a private pilot.

Only weeks after, he had seen an add in the papers. The add said. "Con Air flying service - We train pilots", and Dan found himself punching the numbers on his cellphone, without him ordering them to do so.

And now here he was for the third lesson. So a new instructor could not throw Dan off his stride. He was in heaven, or fairly close at least.

"Good morning" the instructor said, in a deep grinding tone "i´m Gordon Fairbanks"
"Hi" said Dan cheerfully, and offered Mr. Fairbanks his hand. The unstructor made no move to take it.
"Where is Tony?" Dan asked. Tony was the instructor he had had on the two first lessons.
The flight instructor only looked at Dan´s hand, and murmored an inarticulate sound.
"What?" Dan asked
"Your flight instructor is - tied up" Fairbanks said, still not taking Dan´s hand. "I am going to be your instructor for today´s flight"

Dan looked at his outstreched hand, then at the instructor, then back to his hand. The instructor sat completly still. A moment after, Dan lowered his hand, frowning a little. But in the excitement of the flight, he was about to do, he forgot this incident a moment later. This was Dan´s second mistakes. It would not be the last.

The first one had been, not doing as he used to, taking a stroll into the hanger from where the Piper had been parked. Had he done so, things might have been very different, but he had his flightbag in hand when he entered the Cherokee, and had no idea what he was getting into.

Chapter two

Dan throttled the Cherokee smoothly up to full, and looked out the sidewindow for a second. Then he concentrated on the front window, and at exactly the right moment, he pulled slightly on the yoke, and the aircraft lifted off ever so smoothly. The rattling of the wheels on the runway ceased, making the engingsounds the only ones Dan could hear. That and the beating of his heart. Dan looked down at his T-Shirt. Saw the print on it upside down, but it still always made him smile. "Don´t use a papuse - that´s clearly abuse" the text said, circeling a baby in an indian baby carrier. The baby was all tied up, and looked like a foot in a Chinese Shoe, back in the days when Chinese fashion was very tiny feet. Dan has no idea at all why this was funny, anymore than he knew why he was left handed, but the picture of that baby and the stupid text.... "I  know - I´m a darned phesant" he thought to himself and his smile broadened.

"Pay attention" the instructor said, very sharply, and Dans head jerked up. He could feel his cheeks flush with blood.
"Darned" he thought and quickly scanned the instruments. Everything was five-by-five.
"I´m sorry" Dan said, and looked stiffly out the window.
"If you are not going to pay attention to the flight - then we might as well call it a day" the instructor continued. Dan looked at him, and saw that he had taken a pair of Top-Gun sunglasses on. His brow was dotted with droplets of sweat. Dan felt his first trickle of unease.

To be continued.....

ROFL

Well, the famous day i went up...it was mid August...98 degrees F.....heat index 103.  It was freakin hot!  I believe I was soaking wet just getting the "plane" set up and going over the intro flight with Instructor.

I show up, and he said..."ok...hop in the Captains seat....you're flying it today..."

JoeMini [about shizzed in pants...."Errr...say what?"

It was the best time I ever had flying....in fact i bragged about all my "flight sim" experience...and I think he thought i was full of beans but never-the-less he was amazed at how much I knew about things never flying a real plane before.  He handle a lot of stuff for me...(ie the rudder pedals especially) but most of it was all me.  I took the plane off myself....flew for about 40 minutes, and got it on final approach...we "both" landed the plane.  Weather was sunny and windy, but that little Cessna bounced all over the place that day in the summer thermals.

Although I managed not to "hurl".....when I got home...I was let's just say a little squeezy.  Think seriously I was severly dehydrated afterwards....lessoned learned.

So Ole, enjoy the real flight...nothing like being up in the sky by yourself looking down on earth!

Congrats Man! Errr...Pilot Ole!
