Please advise!
I am having real difficulties understanding how to set up for a visual approach whilst landing on an ILS runway, flying the Cessna 172. I finally worked out how to set Nav 1 OBS to the runway heading whilst still in 'cruise' mode, but I cannot sort out the the 'Glide Slope'. The instructor keeps telling me that I am too high, and to lower engine revs, but I can see by the runway indicators, that my approach is good. (Two reds, two whites).

I always get a big ZERO for my landing, yet in my log book, I am praised for a A splendid landing!

Whilst enjoying the experience of flying with my own personal instructor, I would have shoved him out at 1000ft without a parachute, if I could have found a way of doing so!

I think that my problems are caused by not being able to input the correct data into Nav1, but I am not sure.
Help, before I give up and fly my Cessna through Plymouth's departure lounge shouting BANZAI!

FOOTNOTE: Having studied the destruction manual, I now realise that I may be landing too far along the runway. I should be aiming right at the start of the tarmac, perhaps, this is contributing to my Nil Points landings?

You are quite right - we are about to change the message that says splendid landing to not display if the landing was zero points due to landing too far from the touchdown point.

The distance you landed from it is shown in the log book.

Everything else about the landing was good, but you must have landed over 400 feet from the touchdown point.

You need to land right at the start of the runway strip.

Sure - this is not as in real life, but FSFS is based on the pilot striving to land on a particular target, from which we can evaluate the performance in detail.

If you want to do a visual approach at a runway which has ILS, make sure that NAV1 is receiving no signal from anywhere and that you have filed a flight plan in FSFS to that runway.

Thanks for your advice Squadron Leader.

I have had a look at my log book, and sure enough I am landing miles (slight exaggeration) from where I should be!

I use the Airport approach lights to guide me in on a visual approach. Mr Smith is always telling me that I am flying too high and to reduce engine revs, but the lights are showing red (too low).

Is this conflict between the lights and Mr Smith due to the fact that the lights are guiding me to land over the runway threshold, whilst Mr. Smith is trying to get me to land right at the start of the runway?

Generally the instructor and the lights will agree, but it sometimes is not the case.

This can be due to a substantially displaced threshold and we are about to release logic which solves this issue.

It can also be due to FS not giving good signals to the PAPI or VASI lights. This can sometimes clearly be seen when landing ILS whereby the lights are greatly at variance with the ILS glideslope indication.

Add on scenery can also be a factor.
