I find the instructor rates most of my flights the same way and always get a zero score for my landings. Unfair, as some of my landings have been close to perfect.
I also find it is unfair to take off points for the use of autopilot and for the non-use of ILS--in real aviation one uses AP and often one never uses ILS.
Is there a way one change these settings and remove these deficiencies?
Ideally, there should have been an interface where the user defines his difficulty levels.
As it is, I am finding the ratings of my flights all very similar and monotonous and am already thinking of never using the program again unless I can change the settings.
Any ideas are welcome.

Jinx. I saw another post from you, from August 2´nd, where you stated that you were new to FSFlyingSchool. My advice to you is: Dont give up so fast!
The landings are the most difficult task to satisfy Mr.Whittle or the other Instructors, but it can be done - just take a look at the highscore list.
What you need to be very very sure of, is that if you land WITHOUT ILS, then you have a spot to aim for. This is the edge of the runway, unless you make a spot yourself, this is all explained in the manual, and is easy to change.
You will NOT be penalized for not landing ILS - in fact, if you perform the landings correct, you can achieve higher scores in non-ILS landings, as they are harder to perform, having no aids to guide you down.
if you land non-ILS you have to file a flightplan (but now you can simply "steal" that from your current FS flight if you have filed one here)
Make sure your NAV1 OBS setting is set to the exact runway heading.
Follow the instructors advice and the PAPI lights coming down the shoot - and
LAND as close to the landing spot as you possible can. this is IMPORTANT as if you land more than about 4-500 feet away from the spot, you WILL get a zero for landing. (You can see how far from the spot you landed in the post flight evaluation)
The landing itself, of course need to be good too - not fast, not hard, aligned with rwy, flaps down on time - and so on and so on.
Follow those rules, and the landing scores will start to kick in - believe me.
As for the different difficulty levels - this would ruin the highscore idea, and thus the comparison to other pilots, as you would have to have a highscore list for each difficult level.
As for the points taken away for using AP - well the instructor likes to rate YOUR skills - not the autopilot´s! Need I say more?
Stick to it Jinx - you WILL get at it, and then you will love it - again. I promise you that!
Regards
Ole Andreasen, Denmark

Thanks again Ole - all very well expressed and accurate. Jinx: Ole is just one of thousands of both real world and simulator pilots who are enjoying our award winning products and I can assure you that you'll soon be having a fun, challenging time while improving your flight simulation skills with FSFS. All our products are available as free demo downloads so that folks can try them out thoroughly before even thinking about spending money. There are many things that affect the scoring in FSFS as flight is of course a complex business and therefore FSFS requires that the user cooperates with its way of using Flight Simulator. You certainly don't need to use ILS. You must land at a certain place on the runway if you are not using ILS. You must file a flight plan if you are not using ILS. You must set NAV1 OBS to the exact runway heading. All this is covered in detail in the manual. Let us know how you get on!

Jinx, I have only used FSFS for 8 flights as I write this. The first flight didnt go to well so we say lol. I wont give you the score because there wasn't one, I crashed! I was thinking about all the things needed for FSFS and I forgot about the big mountain in front of me. It was at night though in severe clouds and weather. I will post some screenshots in a tick.
Now I am getting better scores because I have read the manual, I listen to the bloke sat next to me and I keep an eye on all the things that matter. I havent hit a mountain since! Oh and my scores are improving.
