Hi all, Having trouble getting any sense out of Mr Smith when trying to fly a circuit. (I have achieved 70+ for landing and 80+ for flight). Mr Smith does not seem to recognise which leg of the circuit I am on, usually one leg behind me. ie when I am actually on "crosswind" he will be telling me to turn on to "crosswind" and when on "downwind" he will tell me to turn on to "downwind". Sometimes though even when I am just taking off ie on "upwind " he will tell me to turn to "final"!! 1. Having entered circuit mode (cntl+shift+space) with my C172 on the numbers why do I still have to advance to take off mode - cannot this be done automatically? If I forget to do this I get an angry Mr Smith criticising my excessive taxi speeds! 2. I thought you had to have 70+ and 80+ points for landings and flight before you could do circuits. Even with a new pilot (no flights) I seem to be able to enter circuit mode. Any insight into my confusion gratefully received. Cheers

Curcuits are tricky...
The thing to do is to be absolutely clear on what Smith wants you to do. First climb to 500 feet above the airfield. Thats NOT 500 feet on your altimeter, but the ground altitude plus 500 feet. Go slow on this first leg so you get a little distance from the runway. Then turn left to the crosswind leg - AT 500 FEET above the airfield, and climb slowly to 1000 feet above the airfield. slowly so you again get some distance to use when you turn onto the baseleg, later in the circuit. then you turn left to downwind leg and fly till the rwy 45 degrees to the left and back. and turn left to baseleg, where you descend to 500 feet before turning the final left on to final.
Sounds easy but isnt. Smith wants you to be at the correct height and at the correct headings all the time. (mark the rwy heading and make a sheet with the other headings you have to use - or at least thats what I do)
Then after a couple of tries Smith starts to like you, Im pretty sure.
The second thing. you still have to do the same things as in a normal flight. this is just another thing Smith is monitoring. You have to advance to next mode yourself, unless you have autodetection to cruise and landing (I never have - I want to decide when I am in what mode)
As for your third question. I havent got a clue here. Ill check it out on my system later tonight.

Hi Ole & Big Moose, Biggles here, You've just answered the question I posted elswhere re having to advance even though you are established in Circuits----do you do fortune telling as well! I guess one way to look at it is to treat the Ctrl/Shft/z's advances as if they are radio calls to the tower which you would do in real life. Ole to the rescue again. I suppose you will want preferential treatament on the S&S Tour as well? Biggles

Thanks to the team for helping The Moose. As to:
"FSFlyingSchool instructors will not evaluate circuits until the pilot has proven basic proficiency at flying and landing the aircraft. A Landing Score above 70 and a Flight Score above 80 must be achieved before circuits can be flown with FSFlyingSchool."
You question (regarding this) is well made - FSFS requires the user (the operator of the software) to have achieved these levels, not a specific virtual "pilot". Once the levels have been achieved, you're all set, even if you add a new pilot called "CantFlyWorthADamn" to the roster. Thanks for asking - I will make a note to amend the manual to make this clearer.
