I'm in cruise with the "automatic cruise and landing" unchecked. After takeoff and settled, I can advance to cruise level use autopilot, etc. The problem comes when I'm about 15 miles or so out. I disconnect autopilot, and press CTRL SHIFT Z, and nothing happens. When I slow and lower flaps, gear etc, the instructor tells me to retract them. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong.

Hi again - a bunch of things come to mind. 1. Make sure you get all set up with FS with your plane ready on the ground (or in the air) before starting FSFS. If you don't, keys will not work on some PC. We state this in many places - get set up first. 2. Do the keys never work, or only sometimes? 3. As I recall you've been flying with FSFS for some time - has this problem just started? 4. Do the alternate keystrokes (see manual) work? 5. Do the other keystrokes (e.g. Ctrl Shft D) work? We'll figure it out!

I guess I discovered my problem!! My default flight is set up so that it's 'cold-n-dark'. This helps me when I run my start up checklists. FSFS doesn't like that. Engines must be running as if I'm ready to starting to taxi. I checked both ways, and sure enough. DUH! (Slaps self in forehead)

Jerry: Don't slap too hard! I want to help and so I'll jump back in... All that should be required is that you get out of the initial 'menu' type screens in FSX and 'into the cockpit' before you launch FSFS. It should make no difference at all if you start cold and dark - we do this all the time in testing here at the Sinister Lab. The bottom line is that when FSFS first communicates with FS, it defines what the special keys are. It can do this at any time with FS2004, but with FSX it may not work unless the user is already out of the initial 'menu' type screens in FSX and 'in the cockpit' before launching FSFS. Let us know how you get on!

Thanks for the slap to the head.
After further investigation I determined that in my earlier days of FSFS, I had tried to assign the CTRL+SHIFT+Z to a throttle button by reprogramming one of the FSX functions. This apparently was what the program wanted to do when I did the key press. I removed the key assignment and so far on this flight everything seems to be going ok.
It also looks like, not sure on this one, that you have to exit from FSFS between flights in order for the program to recognize that you're starting a new flight. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one.
All part of the learning curve.
