I was doing another test flight today in the 172SP into KBGR. I was still about 90 miles out level at 6000 feet on autopilot with no problems. At about 85 miles or so the ILS was picked up, and the instructor starts telling me to intersect the glide slope and took off 33% for being on autopilot. I guess the word to the wise is don't tune the ILS too early.

For all I know the ILS signal is picked up at a much closer distance than 85 miles, but many airports have ILS frequencies that are the same, so you might have picked up a signal from another airport. Same result though, so you are right, beware of those ILS settings.

I just want to mention that the 33% deduction for autopilot cannot occur in cruise mode if cruising high enough. The aircraft must have had AP on when not in cruise mode (or when below 5000 AGL in a heavy).

The most common reason that folks get unexpectedly hit with the 33% deduction  is that they have auto-detection of landing mode on and they start a steady descent. This means landing mode will be triggered, and if they were already cruising with AP, they will then get hit for being in landing mode with AP.

...and another thing...

Remember, all you folks who enjoy cruising with AP on in FSFS2009, that if you fly like a real pilot, with failures turned on to a challenging level...   remember that the dear old AP can fail, in many, many different ways in FSFS2009.   Sometimes it'll take you minutes to figure out what is going wrong.   Sometimes the failure of an AP subsystem will have the plane either crashed or overstressed in no time at all.   The pilot still has to manage the systems even though he/she is not hand flying that big bird...
