I'm very much enjoying FSFlyingSchool, however for each session I find that I have to re-enable my preferred Aircraft settings (Monitor Engines, Monitor Lights, Instructor Volume). Is there a way these settings can be more permanently enabled?

I don't have FSFS in X Plane, but here's what works for me in FSX/FS9/P3D. Not sure if you tried this yet, but if not:
After you land, the FSFS gives you your flight ratings. Once those are presented to you, your flight's done.
Go and click the 'Disconnect' box in the upper right hand side of the menu.
Then go to the 'Aircraft' page, as to make sure you have your plane's data saved.
You do that by clicking whatever data is already checked off (if FSFS has it there automatically) or create your own by checking off the 'User Specified Data'.
Then go look under the 'Flap Settings' box to the right of the 'Data Source' box. See the Save User Data box there? Click it. The plane's info is now saved.
Now go to the 'Pilots' page in the menu. Click the Save Pilot box. This should take care of your problem -the key word here is should...
If you did everything right, all that preset data will now be active for your next flight with FSFS in that particular plane.

Hi Aquilam:
First thanks to Steve for helping - in this case the user interface of FSFS XP10 is rather different and has rather fewer options than the FSX version, so I will try to help.
- The options for a specific airplane which you have selected are recorded automatically once you have connected and flown that plane, even for a few seconds.
- The options for the PILOT are only recorded if the SAVE PILOT button is used.
If you have problems can you give me specifics about things you changed for the plane that were not saved and also the name of the plane?
Please also copy and paste the contents of your
Aircraft.dat
file from your FSFlyingSchool folder - this is where the preferences (not the core data) for the planes are stored.
Finally - I need to know the date and time of the last session you flew before sending these items to us and also the date and time of the
Aircraft.dat file
as it is displayed on your PC.

I want to be quite clear - the values are saved in this file without any need for the pilot to alter the file itself.

I think I understand. What I wasn't doing was loading the aircraft, i.e., connecting FSFlyingSchool to an active X-Plane session, before clicking those check boxes, so they weren't being saved with the aircraft. Probably more a RTFM issue for me.

I just happened to pop in at that moment, as I was coming in here to read up on (and consider upgrading) my current FSFS -which I did (to 863 for FSX FS9) tonight.
Couldn't pass up that Labor Day special, thanks for offering that btw...
In the back of my mind I kind of thought the same thing, that the X Plane interface was different. Just throwing some ideas out there, hoping to help out.
I only have the X Plane demo, and never went with the full version yet. That said, I did like what I seen in the XP demo.
Maybe someday I'll get into XP, but for now FSX, FS9, and P3D with FSPS suits me just fine  .

And yes - X-Plane 10 is a tempting simulator. It's a great time to be in flight simulation with a lot of great choices on offer!
