The following is a list of different stages of flight in which events will cause your instructor to talk to you, with specific reference to the Douglas DC3 you are flying.

Cold and Dark

­ [Shortly after flight starts on ground]
Advice that both generators must be on.

­ [Shortly after flight starts on ground with master battery on]
Estimate of current fuel as a percentage of full.

Starting Engines

­ [Engine start attempted with master battery switch off]
Advice that the master battery switch must be on when starting the engines.

­ [Engine start attempted with its magnetos not set to both]
Advice that the engine's magnetos must be set to both when starting the engines.

­ [Engine start attempted and throttle not correctly set]
Advice that throttle should be cracked when starting the engine.

­ [Engine start attempted and mixture not correctly set]
Advice that mixture should be full forward to auto-rich when starting the engine.

­ [Engine start attempted and propeller lever not correctly set]
Advice that propeller lever should be full forward when starting the engine.

­ [Engine start attempted and fuel boost pump not on]
Advice that engine's fuel boost pump must be on when starting the engine.

­ [Engine start attempted and fuel tank selector not correctly set]
Advice that its fuel tank should be either left main or right main (matching the engine) when starting the engine. This can easily be set in the Just Flight aircraft, but in the MS aircraft will require the use of the 2D panel.

­ [Engine start attempted and parking brake not set]
Warning that parking brake must be set when starting the engines.

Taxi Out

­ [Shortly after moving in taxi mode]
Advice on which instruments and systems should be checked during taxiing.

­ [Shortly after moving in taxi mode]
Advice to set flaps up or 1/4 for a short field.

­ [Taxiing out and cowl flaps not fully open]
Advice to fully open cowl flaps.

­ [Moving in taxi mode and too much flaps]
Advice to set flaps up or 1/4 for a short field.


Take Off

­ [On ground with boost pumps off]
Warning that boost pumps must be on during takeoff.

­ [On ground with autopilot on]
Warning that autopilot must be off during takeoff.

­ [On ground with parking brake on and take off throttles]
Warning that parking brake needs to be off.

­ [Shortly after beginning takeoff]
Advice to move throttles smoothly up to full.

­ [Shortly after beginning takeoff]
Advice that the nose wheel can be lifted at 84 KIAS.

­ [Shortly after takeoff]
Reminder to raise any flaps.

­ [Shortly after takeoff]
Reminder that vY best rate of climb with 2 engines is 120 KIAS. Use this speed to climb after takeoff in normal operations.

­ [Taking off and an engine lost]
Reminder that vYSE best rate of climb with 1 engine is 110 KIAS.

­ [Shortly after takeoff]
Reminder that if heavy turbulence is encountered the aircraft must be at or below maneuvering speed and that this will decrease as fuel is used.

­ [Cruise climb]
Advice that for this aircraft typical cruise climb settings are 35 IMP, 2,350 RPM.

­ [Climbing after take off and cowl flaps not open half way]
Advice to close cowl flaps half way.


Cruise

­ [Entry into cruise]
Advice that for this aircraft typical cruise settings are 28 IMP, 2,050 RPM and lean the mixture.

­ [Cowl flaps not closed]
Advice to close cowl flaps during cruise.

­ [Above maximum altitude]
Advice to descend below 23,200 feet.

Descent and Landing

­ [Cruise descent]
Advice that for this aircraft typical cruise descent settings are 28 IMP, 2,050 RPM.

­ [Gross weight over 26,200 pounds]
Advice that weight must be reduced for landing.

­ [Descent to landing and propeller levers not set]
Reminder that propeller control levers need to be at high RPM (fully forward) for landing.

­ [Descent to landing and mixture levers not set]
Reminder that mixture levers need to be at auto-rich (fully forward) for landing.

­ [Descent to around 600 feet AGL while landing]
Advice to use pitch to control airspeed and power to control rate of descent during approach and landing.

­ [Descending and decelerating to maximum flap speed while landing]
Advice that once below 135 KIAS the pilot may use 1/4 flaps.

­ [Descending and decelerating to next flap speed while landing]
Advice that once below 99 KIAS the pilot may use 1/2 flaps.

­ [Descending and decelerating to next flap speed while landing]
Advice that once below 97 KIAS the pilot may use 3/4 to full flaps.

­ [Descent to around 500 feet AGL while landing]
Advice that you typically want to land with full flaps around 85 KIAS.

­ [Descent to around 400 feet AGL while landing]
Reminder to touchdown with around 5 degrees nose up pitch.

­ [Descent to around 300 feet AGL while landing]
Reminder that throttles should be idle at touchdown.

­ [Descent to around 400 feet AGL while landing]
Reminder to flare at about 10 to 15 feet above the runway and to lift the nose to land on your main gear first, lower the tail gently and use minimum braking required.

­ [Descent to around 300 feet AGL while landing]
Reminder that at about 10 to 15 feet above the runway you should reduce power to idle and flare.

­ [Autopilot on below 1000 feet AGL]
Warning to turn autopilot off.


Taxi In

­ [Taxiing in cowl flaps not fully open]
Advice to fully open cowl flaps.

­ [Pitot heat on]
Advice to turn pitot heat off.

­ [Landing lights on]
Advice to turn off landing lights.

­ [Radio master on]
Advice to turn radio master off.

General Warnings and Advice

­ [Master battery on and engines running]
Reminder to turn on radio master switch

­ [Tail wheel not locked and not taxiing]
Reminder to lock tail wheel.

­ [Engine 1 or engine 2 starter switch on and its engine running]
Reminder to turn off the starter.

­ [On ground and too heavy to take off]
Warning gross weight exceeds maximum take off weight of 26,200 pounds.

­ [No smoking sign off]
Advice to turn on no smoking sign.

­ [Engines off and pitot heat on]
Advice to turn off pitot heat.

­ [Airborne and parking brake on ]
Warning that parking brake needs to be off.

­ [Pitot heat off and engines running not taxiing]
Advice to turn on pitot heat.

­ [Loss of both engines while airborne]
Advice that the best glide speed in this aircraft is 107 KIAS.

­ [Engine fire started]
Warning that an engine is on fire and advice that its fuel tank should be shut off immediately. This can easily be set in the Just Flight aircraft, but in the MS aircraft will require the use of the 2D panel.

­ [Shutting down and mixture levers not both cutoff]
Advice to cut off both mixture levers.

­ [Primer being used with engine off]
Advice that up to four strokes of the engine primer can be used before starting.

­ [Primer being used too much with engine off]
Advice that up to four strokes of the engine primer can be used before starting.

­ [Primer being used with engine running]
Advice that primer is not used when an engine is already running.

­ [Engine 1 or engine 2 starter switch just turned on]
Reminder to check the oil pressure.

­ [Engine 1 generator switch off]
Reminder to turn on engine 1 generator.

­ [Engine 2 generator switch off]
Reminder to turn on engine 2 generator.

­ [Shutting down and carburetor heat off]
Reminder to turn on carburetor heat.

­ [Speed approaching vNE]
Warning that you are close to exceeding 224 KIAS which is never exceed speed for this aircraft.

­ [Flight plan destination runway length less than 2,500 feet]
Warning that a different runway or airport should be chosen.

­ [Speed approaching vNO]
Reminder that you need smooth air to fly above 'vNO' (Maximum Structural Cruising Speed) which is 185 KIAS for this aircraft.

­ [Fuel level low]
Warning that fuel is below 10 percent and you may wish to consider your refueling options.

­ [Shutting down and propeller anti-ice on]
Advice to turn off propeller anti-ice.

­ [Master battery just switched on]
Estimate of current fuel as a percentage of full.

­ [Flaps down and flying too fast for any flaps]
Advice that once below 135 KIAS the pilot may use 1/4 flaps.

­ [Flaps down and flying too fast for that particular flaps setting]
Advice that once below 99 KIAS the pilot may use 1/2 flaps.

­ [Flaps down and flying too fast for that particular flaps setting]
Advice that once below 97 KIAS the pilot may use 3/4 to full flaps.

­ [Shutting down and fuel boost pumps on]
Reminder to turn off both fuel boost pumps.

­ [Decreasing speed approaching vSO]
Warning that stall speed with full flaps is 77 KIAS which is ‘vSO’ (Stalling Speed in Landing Configuration) for this aircraft.

­ [Decreasing speed approaching vS]
Warning that stall speed with flaps up is 71 KIAS which is ‘vS’ (Stalling Speed with Flaps Up) for this aircraft.

­ [Master battery on and fuel level getting low]
Estimate of current fuel as a percentage of full as fuel falls below 50%, 25%, 10%, 5% and 3%.
