I have just bought FS Flight School Pro 2014 and I really want to like this product. But it is proving rather difficult to like it because when I use the 'On Approach' mode (I do click 'connect' after sitting in a cockpit, as requested) the program just throws me into the mountains, literally.

After connecting, I would expect to join the approach at the relevant altitude, be able to see the runway (if I select no intersect) and be flying at approximately the right speed, so that I can take over and do the rest with the instructor's guidance.

Oh no, what I get is a paused screen staring at a mountain, often in the dark, and I know as soon as I 'un-pause' it, I will have no chance to pull up and fly normally. Sometimes I have even been pitched into a glide with no engine running!!

What the hell is happening?!!

I have calibrated my joystick thinking it may be this, to no avail.

I have uninstalled Vjoystick (whatever the hell that is) which was left over from an unsuccessful attempt to download FaceTrack noIR but I am not expecting that to make any difference (I have yet to restart my PC since doing that).

Please help. I really don't want to have to demand a refund. I am knew to Sim flying. All I want to do for now is practice landing and the flipping software won't let me!!

Hi:

Rest assured that we solve almost every case and I am sure we can solve yours.

An important point is to make sure that when you press connect to start the approach the plane is already set up ready for the job - meaning that the engine is running etc. As explained in the manual, if you have FS2004 (not FSX) you also need to be flying, anywhere in the world, it does not matter, at a suitable approach speed.

You can choose the location and time of day at the flight plan screen within the FSFS program of course.

Please try an approach to KORD (Chicago) and let me know how you get on - and we'll continue from there.

Thanks for the reply.

To clarify, I have FSX installed on a pretty slow set up PC running FSX Booster, but that in itself shouldn't be causing the problems I am getting.

Part of the problem is that I am very new to flight sims and am a complete novice pilot so it's hard to be sure it's not me that's just flying badly, but I don't think so because of what happens.

I made sure the engine was running as you say and then did an 'On Approach' to Chicago (KORD) in the Piper Cub. My marks were poor, which is to be expected, but I am getting a lot of commands that don't make sense, such as 'descend to the glideslope' when I was already clearly under it, or 'your cruising speed is too low' when I was less than 1000ft from the runway clearly trying to land. I switched to random airports and some seem ok, but some do weird things. On one, as soon as I un-paused the screen it had me crashing into water!! Which wasn't even on the screen!! Every time I un-pause I lose control madly with my Instructor shouting at me - it seems that I have no control over what the joystick settings actually are when I join the flight - surely this can't be right?!!

On another occasion I joined a random airport (can't remember which one) on a 10 degree intersect with no runway in sight anywhere with the instructor basically asking me to descend into a mountain...

So I am pretty sure FS Flight School is not working for me right now, complicated by the fact that I am a complete novice pilot.. but when the instructor repeats a sentence straight away or gets cut off halfway through this may suggest I have a problem with the software...

Please help!

Hi:

I think it would be best if you started with a plane you are most familiar with and on the ground so as to leave instant approaches until you are more familiar with flight and with FSFS.

Some element of misunderstanding is apparent here as the instructor will never say "Your cruising speed is too low". He/she may say "You are cruising too low" if you are in cruise mode and you are flying too low. If at that point you are about to land, you need to be in landing mode - full details in the FSFS manual.

"I have no control over what the joystick settings actually are"

Not sure what you are reporting - FSFS does not alter joystick settings - what is the specific nature of the problem?

Rest assured that FSFS's technology has been proven over 7 years of use by thousands of real and simulator pilots all over the world - it does work.

Please let me know how you get on with normal flight (not approaches yet).

Finally - do you have add-on scenery? If so - have you generated runway data for it using FSFS as described in the FSFS manual?

Thanks for the reply.

I am about to upgrade my PC as I'm pretty certain my memory is failing (maybe my real memory too!) and that can cause all sorts of problems. If I have any more problems once upgraded I will let you know.
