I have just reinstalled FSX after buying some X52 controllers. I never did very well trying to run FSX using mouse and keyboard, so I am hoping that some decent controllers will help me. Should I start off using Flight School, or would I do better going through the FSX tutorials?

Morning...
Congratulations on purchasing the Saitek X-52 set. It´s a great set, that I use myself very often. Flying a sophisticated flight sim with keyboard/mouse is not advisable, so you are on the right track now, and I am sure you will see a great leap in your performance instantly.
The tutorials in FSX are always a very good thing to go through if you are not familiar with Microsoft´s flight simulators, and even then, the tutorials are nice, and fun even.
The difference between the tutorials and FSFlyingSchool, (well one of many differences...) is that the tutorials are set in fixed aircraft, on fixed locations, and in strict sequence. You HAVE to do what the instructor tells you, or the tutorial flight will be cancelled.
FSFlyingSchool (FSFS) is a totally open tool. You start up FSX, then start up FSFS - and then fly. The instructors will then comment and monitor your flying, and rate your flights afterwards.
Do not feel intimidated if the instructors sound a bit harsh to begin with - they tend to be a bit cranky here and there... LOL.
No that was only a joke. Thing is; you can use both at the same time. The tutorial flights are there to teach you to perform all aspects of flight, and FSFS will teach you to perform them - to perfection! So my advice is to do all the tutorial flights you can possible get your hands on - as I said, they are not only instructive, they are also very fun... but by all means, turn on FSFS also, and listen to Mr.Smith or one of the other instructors comment on the level of your performance, as you try to comply with your Tutorial instructor... OK it might get a little crowed in the small aircraft, but it´s worth it in the end.
But all this is only my opinion, based on personal experience... if you do not want to use both at the same time, I advice to go through the Tutorial flights first - and THEN turn on FSFS. Do not forget the latter of the two - it makes all the difference between being a good pilot - and becoming an ace pilot.

Most informative, thank you. Based on what you say I think I'll start out just doing the FSX tutorials. Then when I'm comfortable with the setup I may add the Flight School and see if that helps or hurts my performance. Big thing is, I now understand the difference between the tutorial and the "school"
