David: In order for FSFlyingSchool (FSFS) to evaluate your landing, you need to either perform a visual approach and land at one of the airports with an associated file provided by FSFS, or, more usually, land at an airport with an Instrument Landing System (ILS). For visual approaches, which require you to load a flight plan into FSFS, please see the description of visual approaches in the manual. To perform an ILS approach, which will mean that the instructor says that the glideslope IS available, just tune your NAV1 radio to the ILS frequency of the runway you are landing at. You can get the frequency by looking at the airport in the MAP mode of Flight Simulator (FS) - just click on the runway and the stats on that runway will appear, including the ILS frequency and the runway heading. The runway heading should be set, by you, on the OBS of NAV1 (the dial with 360 degees around it). This is so that the instructor knows the heading of the runway you propose to land at. The setting of this instrument is sometimes hard to read in FS and so FSFS gives you a key press to show its current setting - Ctrl Shift D (think of D for Data). On many aircraft, this setting is called the COURSE. Note it is not the autopilot heading. When landing, follow the glideslope and localizer needles on your NAV1 instrument or HSI if so equipped. Also - if you can... look out the window(!!!) and align your aircraft with the centre line. The glideslope is often easy to follow by looking at the VASI, PAPI lights beside the runway. They are all red if too low, all white if too high and red and white if you are on the correct glideslope. Your instructor will advise you if you are too high, too low, or not aligned with the centre line. if what the instructor is saying does not make sense, it will be because he/she does not know what you are trying to do, because the steps described above have not been taken. Set it up correctly and the instructor will be your best buddy! A firm tutor, but a fair one. Let us know if you have any other questions - and how you get along in your adventures with FSFlyingSchool.

David: Have fun - using the ILS is a lot of fun and of course it still works when you cannot see the runway. Once you get the hang of it, try turning the visibility in FS down very low and you'll enjoy a whole new challenge in FS and in FSFS!
