Ver 2010
FSX sp2
Win 7
Here is the scenario: I'm sitting in my Cessna, and I TAB-out to FSF to load a short little flight from SFO to HAF (Half Moon Bay). HAF only has 2 runways (one landing strip), 12 and 30, so I choose rwy 12. Once I'm back in the plane, the instructor says his thing. I take off and now getting close to HAF. I go into landing mode and he says that "runway 122" is our target runway. 122? He never calls out the correct runway. So I'm lined up with runway 12 and he keeps saying "You're not lined up with the runway", so I know this isn't going to score, but I land anyway. I've loaded the flight plan and landing runway in FSF, so what am I missing? I've even clicked auto-tune ILS tuning to be done by instructor. I've not scored over 70 landing, so I'm still in basic mode I guess (not sure what that's about). In the flight log it said I was over 1350 feet away from my target..... 1350 feet?...there is only one landing strip to land on and no other within a few miles! Any help would be appreciated.
I also noticed checking "auto-detect" flight mode does not make a difference. He always thinks I'm getting ready to land every time I lower RPMs and descend even though I have no intention of landing any time soon. Makes me wonder what other option don't work.
Thanks

Thanks.Hi, Biggles here, Let me see if I can help clear the air a little No r/w heading is exact (not in MSFS & I would guess also in real life) so r/w 25 could actually have a compass heading of 251 degrees - 254 degrees & still be designated rw 25. In the case of KHAF r/w 12 has a actual compass heading of 122 degrees (in MSFS) and what the instructor is saying is that "Nav 1 OBS is indicating the r/w heading is 122 degrees" (or words to that effect.) Some r/w heading in MSFS are pretty accurate but I am aware of some where where they are 8 deg out when compared to the r/w designator ie. RW16 can actually have a compass heading of 168 degrees. Previous versions of fsflying School did not automatically set the Nav1OBS heading to the r/w heading, you had to visit the r/w in question, check the actual heading & then manually crank the Nav1OBS heading. fsfs2010 does this automatically for the destination r/w in your flight plan "You're not lined up with the runway", Well sometimes the instructors get out of bed the wrong side and can almost seem bully to you to get lined up. "I've not scored over 70 landing" When fsfs scores your landing it does this by reference to a number of factors, one of which is the exact spot on the r/w where your wheels touchdown first. By default this spot is the very start / edge of the r/w, not very realistic but you have to pick a point somewhere. A more realistic way is to create your own NonILSrw file.(ie. your own landing spot) Place your a/c at the point of the destination r/w that you want to choose as your touchdown spot ( numbers, tyre marks etc) and then select Ctrl/Shift/M and a Non ILS landing spot will be created for you in fsfs. NonILSRW files are more fully explained in the manual "auto-detect" flight mode I don't use the auto detect and the only "problem" I get is Smithy gets upset if I go below 1000ft. Telling me to gain height and the green banner asking "Are you landing". Smithy doesnt ask and I just keep quiet Try this. Re-fly SFO / HAF Get yourself roughly on the r/w heading at 1200ft agl on long finals. Select landing Mode C/S/Z. and aim for the very edge of the r/w 12 and see what you landing spot distance is? I bet its a lot better I hope this helps you, even if only a tiny bit. It is a cracking programme Biggles

Hi gfxdsnr427 (EDIT - Biggles posted while I wrote my post, so somethings in my post might be covered by Biggles - sorry about that!)
All options work in FSFS 2010, and its predecessors. I have done thousands of flights using FSFS, and it works fine. But I have looked into your problems.
When you approach the Half Moon Bay airport, rwy 12, the instructor will call the rwy, and the heading. The rwy is of course 12, but the HEADING is 122, is there a possibility you might have mistaken those calls?
Half Moon Bay rwy 12 has no ILS landing, so you cannot have the instructor autodial the ILS. You need to set your NAV1 OBS dial to the rwy heading 122, or the instructor will say you are not lined op with the runway. The Instructor will do this for you in version 2010, but as I recall (dont hang me on this issue) you have to be at a certain distance for him to actually do that - if he dosent, please set it yourself. (press ctrl-shift-D) to and look at the green line of text if the setting is 122.
In the Pilots tab in FSFS bottom left, you can check/uncheck cruisemode and landingmode. Both need to be unchecked if you want to control the "modes" yourself. Instructor can still ask you if you intend to land, if he thinks thats what you are about to do, but he will not take you to landingmode anymore. You have to do that.
Have you done the "make runways" succesful? If - then you should be able to do landings. but remember that you need to land AT THE EDGE OF THE RUNWAY, if you havent made a rwyfile yourself. (se manual) if you land further down the runway, you can easily get 1350 feet off, and as for you max 70 points, its very important to land at - or very close to - the landing spot, points will flush down the drain very very quickly.
Hope this helps a little.

- and just to point out one thing.
When Biggles is saying: "Well sometimes the instructors get out of bed the wrong side and can almost seem bully to you to get lined up", he is of course joking.
The instructor in FSFS is a computer program, and responds to a certain issue, in a certain way, every time! So why do we sometimes experience different statements from the instructor on the same thing, for instance, different call outs on landings at the same runway?
Well, you have to look at the PC industry, and FSX/2004 in this case. I don't think there are one single combination of PC hardware, and FS software, with addons, that are totally the same. This is the general nightmare for a developer of add-on software, that needs to respond to different circumstances in for instance FSX.
The instructor monitors more than 70 different aspects of your flying, twice every second, and he (the program) does it, by going through FSUIPC, and looking into the different strings of programming in FS. - planes, default/addon, scenery default, addon, traffic, default, addon, and the settings of your FS configuration, how much autogen have you set, if nothing then he will not call out "you flew too low over that thing" when going over a tree near the runway, because there IS no tree. Aircraft developers have different solutions to how they write the plane´s configuration files, and FSFS have to look at all that. Add-on scenery might change location and/or heading of runways, and FSFS needs to look at that too.
So all in all, its one heck of a complicated process that is going on, when you fly and get evaluated by the instructor. But he doesn't "get out of bed at the wrong side" as this would require a randomized responds to a certain situation - this would be fun, and have the instructor seem more "lifelike" but then again, we want to be evaluated professional, and the same way, as far as its possible, according to the above differences, every time we do the same thing, so he follows his pre-programmed responses to everything he "sees"

Okay, so it was the correct runway... I get it now. "You're not lined up with the runway" was throwing me off, I figured I was at the wrong r/w. You're both right, 122 was the heading I heard it wrong as he doesn't say the actual r/w number.
My very next landing was...
"Landing Score:63.00 (60, 60)
Landing was successful in the following areas:
* Good glideslope on visual approach.
* Good alignment with runway on visual approach.
* Gentle touchdown.
* Good landing speed - not too fast.
* Wings were level.
* Distance from touchdown target (visual approach): 253 feet
* Glideslope held until flare.
* Good pitch control after touchdown.
* Good pitch at landing.
* With flaps - good job.
* Heading aligned with runway.
* Throttle(s) idle.
* Good controlled final descent to touchdown.
* Good steering after landing.
A splendid landing!"
Thanks Bruce and oleandreasen for the help!
