Hello there,

I was wondering what is the best technique to use when landing a small plane with a cross wind.  I have tried landing in a crosswind, but usually get a landing score of 0, because my plane is pointing in the same direction of the runway.

If I have a cross wind from the right, my approach is usually set up the my plane faces slightly to the right, which gives me a more or less same direction movement as the runway.  Do I keep my plan facing to the right, or must I correct this, just before touch down?  If so, when?  Before I flare, or after.

I would appreciate some feedback, as I am struggling with the crosswind landing.

Hello there,

I was wondering what is the best technique to use when landing a small plane with a cross wind. I have tried landing in a crosswind, but usually get a landing score of 0, because my plane is pointing in the same direction of the runway.

If I have a cross wind from the right, my approach is usually set up the my plane faces slightly to the right, which gives me a more or less same direction movement as the runway. Do I keep my plan facing to the right, or must I correct this, just before touch down? If so, when? Before I flare, or after.

I agree - its a great product. It really whips you if you dont do it right, so you learn...

When landing crosswind, its correct that you must keep the plane pointed into the wind, just enough to keep the plane moving in the right direction. When getting close to touchdown, (and its my experience that the crosswind usually gets lighter down there - but of course not always) you must point the plane to the exact runway heading just before touching down. The later you do it, the less you will drift, so as late as possible. Weather its before of after flare.... I cannot say, It depends on the strenght and direction of the wind I think. I am so busy doing it, when I do it, that I cannot say exactly when. Ill try to look closer next time.

If you really are a hotshot, you can line up just enough to the right (if its a right crosswind of course) so that the wind will drift you right onto the centerline on those final feet of descend....

Hi, Biggles here,

I use the following technique and it works (sometimes)

As you say you need to aim off into wind so that you can drift (track) on the rw heading. With my aircraft I fly slightly right wing low for a xwind from the right and just before flaring bring the a/c onto rw heading by use of the rudder and then flare.

As I've said before it works  sometimes

Practice makes perfect????

Hi folks.

I won't get into the details of flying crosswind approaches and landings here - that is described elsewhere in much better detail than I can type up at this point, but...

...with regard to how FSFS scores your landing...

FSFS wants you to be "lined up with the runway" when you are on final. By this the instructor is looking for you to be flying a flight path which is in line with the runway. Your nose can be pointed wherever you like really, but your flight path has to be taking you right down the center of the runway.

This is shown clearly on an ILS approach by the deflection of the NAV1 localizer needle or on a an HSI.

When you actually touchdown, the instructor wants your aircraft to be pointing down the runway center line and wants it to stay that way until you enter taxi mode.

Finally, the greater the crosswind speed and the more severe its angle, the more you score.
