(This is posted by SquadronLeader on behalf of wsjeff1)

I am new to using the program and I notice that I get points deducted when I turn of the ILS signal to land. At about 500ft before I land I turn it off so I can level off and land. The program tell me that I turned the ILS off which I thought I was supposed to do in order to control the aircraft for landing. If I don't trun it off I can't flare and either crash or land too hard.

Could someone please tell me at what point I should turn it(ILS) off when landing without causing the program to deduct points?  r perhaps just tell me how to use the ILS for landing in the 1st place.

Thanks,

wsjeff1

Welcome to the forum!

I think we'll need to clarify a few points - we need to talk about:

The Autopilot ("AP")
The Mode Control Panel ("MCP")
AP or MCP set to "Approach mode"
ILS
FSFlyingSchool scoring

The Autopilot ("AP")
If you engage this in FSFS, you will lose 33% of your overall score. If you are flying the big stuff, you can still get very good scores, especially in low visibility and strong crosswinds at landing.
If this is engaged, you can use it to control many aspects of flight and landing. If the runway was an ILS and you are tuned to it on NAV1, and you have 'NAV' set on the FSX cockpit's NAV/GPS switch, you can use the AP's Approach Mode to track the ILS and fly the plane down the glideslope.

The Mode Control Panel ("MCP")
Only the big stuff have these. This is the panel in the Boeing, for example, which has all the course, heading, airspeed, vertical speed, altitude controls on it which when an AP is actually ON, control the plane's flight. This is also affected by whether the autothrottle is engaged (so the engines can be controlled).

AP or MCP set to "Approach mode"
This is only meaningful if the runway has ILS and it is tuned on NAV1 and you have 'NAV' set on the FSX cockpit's NAV/GPS switch. In this case you can use the Approach Mode to track the ILS and fly the plane down the glideslope. In FSFS this can work very well and sometimes... not so well.
It is usually best to intercept the ILS at about a 45 degree lateral angle in my experience. You can see the ILS 'feathers' on the map display, so approach them offset by 45 degrees. Once your instruments indicate that you are picking up the ILS, turn on the approach mode. It will take over and fly you to the runway.
I think SOP in the real world is for the pilots to turn off the AP at 1,000 AGL and land by hand unless conditions require the AP to do it.

ILS
You'll get the idea of what this is for and how to use it from the above.

FSFlyingSchool scoring
As mentioned 33% off for using the AP. But - you do not lose points for using ILS. Leave it tuned - no need to ever turn it away from the runway tuning, unless you are doing a visual approach in which case it must not be tuned to an ILS.
