Hi, I know what V1, Vr, and V2 speeds are, although not sure what they are for every airplane, but what is transition altitude? I guess I could ask: What would be the V1, Vr, V2, and transistion altitude be for the C172? Joe

Yeah! An FSFS pilot who wants to chat! Go for it! In FSFS, the 'v' speeds are called off by the instructor when you take off. The do not at present control or affect anything else. The are usually only a formal factor on airliners. The pilot not flying will call them off to the pilot flying. V1 is the speed beyond which the takeoff cannot be aborted - even with braking, you'd run out of runway. Vr is the rotate speed - gently lift the nose from the runway. V2 takeoff safety speed - you want to reach this pretty darned quick after you leave the ground (technical talk here...) You can find a lot more about these on the web. In FSFS they are there for atmosphere and to encourage you to operate your airliner like the real thing. I guess with a small plane you'd still be able to specify Vr to FSFS if you wanted. In all cases the V speeds depend on several factors, including takeoff weight, etc. If Vr is not specified by the pilot then FSFS will make a reasonable estimate at it and use it when it calls for 'rotation'. The transition altitude is the altitude above which all pilots set their altimeter to the same setting. It varies from country to country and can vary within the same country. When above this altitude, the altimeter is set to 29.92 in Hg (imperial) or 1013 mb (metric). FSFS has this at 18,000 feet by default.

I would be more than happy to chat I just didn't know if I could take up the forums with "flying" questions over trying to help people up and going with FSFlyingSchool. I'd like to share a couple observations and ask a few more questions if I may??? Let's see, I quit counting how many times have seen you stress the point of reading the manual for the answers first? I don't know how many times I read it in threads and your manual about making sure you and your instructor are on the same page. Do you realize if you press the [Ctrl-Alt-Z] or [Ctrl-Alt-X] doesn't do _______? (<- insert your favorite word) Realizing I'm an idiot, if you push the correct buttons, low and behold, it actually works? Doh! Apparently I don't know the different between the Alt and Shift key....Sheez!!! I'm proud to say I've finally broken the 100 point mark on a rectangle pattern last night after 3 or 4 tries. Yea Baby! 6th place in the standings, looking for better things soon. I keep forgetting to open a internet session before trying to post my scores. I keep seeing those two hyperlinks to post scores, but I forget to open a session, which puts your websites scoring page in lalapalooza land. I'm getting there...there's still hope for me. Now for some questions: 1. Preflight checks: I've got the instructor to say rudder, elevator,Ailerons, flaps, and exit to say "check". I know from flying a few times with the magneto checks that you get the planes rpm's up to 1500-1700rpms, and then switch the magneto's from both, to 1 and 2, and watch for a slight drop in rpm's. I tried this while still at my parking space, moved plane to somewhere on taxiway, so I was wondering where do you have to be in this simulator for the instructor to say magneto "checks" ok, or what do I need to be doing? 2. Take-off - I haven't got the instructor to call out my V1, Vr, and V2. This again might be me, so I'll look into this one again. I kind like having the guy "bark" at me. General questions: (As far as grading your flights, etc) 1. Does the FSFS take into account things such as you are talking to the Towers, ATC, etc? Making sure you are talking to ATC in Tower control airspace, etc? 2. I was messing around with a longer flight (KDFW-KSAT) and I was cruising along at 18,000 feet, got a call from ATC to drop to 4500' (Can't remember exact mileage out, but let's say 65 miles out), and the program decided I was in a landing mode and to start lining up with runways and stuff. Well I'm not really in landing mode at this point, so I'm guessing you can revert it back to cruise mode until you get closer to set your ILS/DME landing frequencies? From just a few days of using it, I love it! I'm a 40 something - avid aviation guy, work in the field, I'm finally going to go after my PPL soon, so this software will be great supplement with my real world training. I'm already seeing improvements in my thought processes with a lot of things I took for granite. More to come!!! Joe

I would be more than happy to chat I just didn't know if I could take up the forums with "flying" questions over trying to help people up and going with FSFlyingSchool. I'd like to share a couple observations and ask a few more questions if I may??? We welcome any discussion of FSFlyingSchool here - we want to hear from FSFS Pilots! Well - glad that's sorted out! What name are you using in the high scores tables? Same as forum? Now for some questions: 1. Preflight checks: I've got the instructor to say rudder, elevator,Ailerons, flaps, and exit to say "check". I know from flying a few times with the magneto checks that you get the planes rpm's up to 1500-1700rpms, and then switch the magneto's from both, to 1 and 2, and watch for a slight drop in rpm's. I tried this while still at my parking space, moved plane to somewhere on taxiway, so I was wondering where do you have to be in this simulator for the instructor to say magneto "checks" ok, or what do I need to be doing? This should be announced simply by doing exactly what you described while still in 'taxi' mode. It does not matter where you are, other than on the ground... Ah - I checked - you need the parking brake set too. 2. Take-off - I haven't got the instructor to call out my V1, Vr, and V2. This again might be me, so I'll look into this one again. I kind like having the guy "bark" at me. I checked into this further too - these are only announced for Heavy aircraft, it being considered unusual, at least by FSFS, for these to be 'called out' in a light aircraft. Perhaps this could be made an option... General questions: (As far as grading your flights, etc) 1. Does the FSFS take into account things such as you are talking to the Towers, ATC, etc? Making sure you are talking to ATC in Tower control airspace, etc? Not yet - this information is not yet available to us using the method we use to interface with FS. We hope to get it integrated into future versions. You have a few options here. If you feel that you can rely on yourself to 'announce' landing mode to the instructor (by far the best way) then turn off the auto detection of this mode in the Pilots Page. If not - then you can always cancel a landing by backing up the flight mode by pressing Ctrl Shift X or Ctrl Shift 2. You can also use these if you wish to divert to an alternate or if you need to 'go around'. From just a few days of using it, I love it! I'm a 40 something - avid aviation guy, work in the field, I'm finally going to go after my PPL soon, so this software will be great supplement with my real world training. I'm already seeing improvements in my thought processes with a lot of things I took for granite. Wow - thanks for the kind words and best of luck with that PPL! And now - the legal stuff... I know you already know this and we all know it is on page 1 of the manual... but our lawyer makes us do things a certain way...

What name are you using in the high scores tables? Same as forum? Yes, I'm using JoeMini Now for some questions: 1. Preflight checks: I've got the instructor to say rudder, elevator,Ailerons, flaps, and exit to say "check". This should be announced simply by doing exactly what you described while still in 'taxi' mode. It does not matter where you are, other than on the ground... Ah - I checked - you need the parking brake set too. Hey, parking brake set....it worked! Sounds good, I'll be thinking about things as I'm flying around that maybe you can consider for future....corny or not. My pleasure...I'll just call your software an "enhancement" to me wanting to become a real pilot someday! More to come!!! Keep it comin' Joe! Joe

Interesting sidenote....does your software know when I had ate some mexican food? I had not been airborne for 5 minutes...."Mr Smith" asked several times "what smells?". Cracked me up... More flying stories to come!
