I am having the same issue as this poster: http://www.fsflyingschool.com/forum/Topic9892-5-1.aspx?Highlight=circuit
However, I am using x-plane 9.7. I can't find what he did to fix the situation. I have read the manual and believe I am doing everything correctly. But, the "instructor" seems to keep telling me "... its time to get on the crosswind leg."
Becoming very frustrated...
Thanks for any help!

Hi:
It's quickest if I recycle a little of what I wrote before...
There's quite a lot to do to set up for the circuit mode - this is in the manual of course.
Can you describe exactly what steps you take when you set up for your circuit and which runway and aircraft you are using?
Are you setting NAV1 OBS to the exact runway heading before flight? (As required in the FSFS manual)
Are you using "D" to reset any drift on the heading indicator during the flight? (As required in the FSFS manual)
An idea... one of the best ways to test and to get the hang of circuits in FSFS is to simply fly the flight using the autopilot. You will score no points but you will have precise control of your altitude and heading and should be able to produce a nice looking rectangle with rounded edges, aligned nicely with the runway, on the Google Map.
If you are familiar with the autopilot, can you try this and let me know what results you get? (Include reference to Google flight map please).

Here are the exact steps taken:
1. Open X-plane 9.7.0
2. Load default X-Plane "Cessna_172SP" (Settings to have engines running)
3. Load airport location: KADS (Click on "Take Off RWY 15" button)
4. Open FSF (Voice Pack Included - tested with turning on/off) (Version 1.21 - purchased right before all the new stuff came out )
5. Click "Connect"
6. Ctrl-Shift-Space to start "Circuit Mode"
7. Adjust OBS to "15" (Does NAV1 frequency need to be on something specific?)
8. Set Heading Bug to "15" for reference
9. Push Power to begin rolling (Do we need to indicate "taking off"??)
10. Climb to 500' (I've tried waiting until 1000' as well) [KADS is 644 so 500' would be 1144, correct?]
11. Climbing turn [Left] to Crosswind
12. A few seconds later...Instructor says "You should be turning to crosswind..."
13. All instructions after that no matter which way I turn is, "You should be turning to crosswind..."
Although, I did not really drift too far off (maybe a few feet), I tried "D" but it did not seem to do anything.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the detailed feedback.
Here are the exact steps taken:
1. Open X-plane 9.7.0
2. Load default X-Plane "Cessna_172SP" (Settings to have engines running)
3. Load airport location: KADS (Click on "Take Off RWY 15" button)
Make sure you are in position pointing exactly down the runway, ready for take off.
4. Open FSF (Voice Pack Included - tested with turning on/off) (Version 1.21 - purchased right before all the new stuff came out )
5. Click "Connect"
You need to set everything before you enter circuit mode.
6. Ctrl-Shift-Space to start "Circuit Mode"
7. Adjust OBS to "15" (Does NAV1 frequency need to be on something specific?)
You need to set NAV1 OBS to the exact runway heading. For example at runway 15 it might be something like 149 degrees. This is what you need to set.
8. Set Heading Bug to "15" for reference
This is just for reference to help your circuit, but you need to set it to the exact runway heading. For example at runway 15 it might be something like 149 degrees. This is what you need to set.
9. Push Power to begin rolling (Do we need to indicate "taking off"??)
You should always indicate which flight mode you are in to the FSFS instructor. See manual.
10. Climb to 500' (I've tried waiting until 1000' as well) [KADS is 644 so 500' would be 1144, correct?]
Correct!
11. Climbing turn [Left] to Crosswind
12. A few seconds later...Instructor says "You should be turning to crosswind..."
13. All instructions after that no matter which way I turn is, "You should be turning to crosswind..."
Setting NAV1 OBS correctly, before starting circuit mode, should prevent this.
Although, I did not really drift too far off (maybe a few feet), I tried "D" but it did not seem to do anything.
Sorry - the 'D' key is pressed in FSX to reset the heading indicator if it shows giro drift. Note this has nothing to do with you drifting off course.
Thanks for any help.

SquadronLeader (6/26/2013) Thanks for the detailed feedback.
Here are the exact steps taken:
1. Open X-plane 9.7.0
2. Load default X-Plane "Cessna_172SP" (Settings to have engines running)
3. Load airport location: KADS (Click on "Take Off RWY 15" button)

Yes, clicking on "Take Off RWY 15" button puts you on the runway pointing down, ready for takeoff.
4. Open FSF (Voice Pack Included - tested with turning on/off) (Version 1.21 - purchased right before all the new stuff came out )
5. Click "Connect"
You need to set everything before you enter circuit mode.
Understood, but it did not change anything.
How do you figure out the 'exact' runway heading? I tried using 15 and also tried matching the Magnetic Compass to 155.
8. Set Heading Bug to "15" for reference
This is just for reference to help your circuit, but you need to set it to the exact runway heading. For example at runway 15 it might be something like 149 degrees. This is what you need to set.
Understood, the heading bug does nothing but reference.
9. Push Power to begin rolling (Do we need to indicate "taking off"??)
You should always indicate which flight mode you are in to the FSFS instructor. See manual.
After clicking "Ctrl-Shift Space" to go into "Circuit Mode", then press "Ctrl-Z" to advance to "Take Off" mode? (Just clarifying, but I did try that too.)
Thanks for any help.
After making a few of the recommended adjustments from your post above, it seemed as if it went into the "Circuit Mode" correctly, and appeared to make the correct speaking notations; however, when it came to turn....I still have the same issue. The only REAL difference from what you mentioned above is that maybe the OBS is not set EXACTLY to the heading. But, again, how do you figure out the EXACT runway heading?

I think I finally figured it out. After reading and old post/discussion at http://www.fsflyingschool.com/forum/Topic7391-8-1.aspx , I realized I may not be flying to 500' fast enough.
Sure enough, when I "pop up" to 500' quickly and then begin to climb to 1000', FSF seemed to track correctly. Previously, I was flying a few hundred feet above the runway tracking the runway and then climbing to 500' right before exiting the physical runway to climb 1000'.
I will continue to test this and report back; however, the couple of times I have already done it, it seemed to work.

Well, that wasn't it. Must have been a fluke...or doing something correctly. I'm not sure what I did, it worked correctly 2 times but I did not seem to change anything from the previous settings or issues.
Today, I decided to move to a different airport and heading. I reset all instruments to the correct heading...followed all the above directions....and have read the manual several times. I just don't see anything that I may be setting incorrectly. When it worked, it was great! But it has been frustrating every other time.
I just don't know what else to change/check.

Very puzzling - but I am glad you have seen that it works. This is not a common problem so there is something unique about your PC, configuration or the way you are doing it and the more data we have the more likely we are to solve it.
Using a different airport and heading was a good idea.
Can you also try a 3rd airport and a different airplane? Perhaps something similar to the c172?

I believe I finally got it to work correctly. These are the steps (for anyone having the same issue) I completed using X-Plane 9.7 with the X-Plane's default Cessna 172:
1. Start X-Plane.
2. Location>Global Map>Select Airport>Select "Take Off" button for RWY##. (This should drop you at your selected airport and on the runway of your choice, straight and ready to for takeoff, engines running.)
3. Location>Local Map (Check the heading in the upper right corner); then exit map.
4. Turn on/view the Autopilot Heading (HDG). (Not actually using the AP, just verifying the heading)
5. If you completed #2 above, this step should already be correct; if not, adjust Heading Bug on the Heading Indicator to match the heading shown previously on the map [See #3 above]. While adjusting the Heading Bug, watch the Autopilot Heading (HDG) number to ensure the number matches the map heading exactly.
6.***Most important: Synchronize/adjust the Heading Indicator using the "SYN" knob to the magnetic compass. Now the Heading Bug (orange open arrow) and Heading Indicator (solid white inverted triangle) should be directly on top of each other and pointing up and in the direction of the heading.
7. Set the OBS exactly to the heading. (Count each tick mark to be exact!)
8. Minimize X-Plane. (Or, Alt-Tab to switch to desktop)
9. Open FSFS. Click "Connect."
10. Switch back to X-Plane.
11. Say "Circuit Mode" (if voice activated) (Or, Ctrl-Shift-Space to advance to that mode)
12. When ready, say "Take Off" to advance mode...
13. Roll out...
I hope the above steps help someone else not become quite as frustrated as I was during this process. The manual does cover the above steps but, I believe, not in enough detail. It is now much more fun doing circuits!
