Joseph.

When Smith wont recognize your keysrokes for advancing to next flightlevel, it is almost always because of the sequence of how you connect FSFS and FSX.

Always! have your plane on the ground (or in the air if you prefer) before starting FSFS or at least before pressing "connect" This way you should have no problems.

The keystrokes are described in the manual. but are in short.

ctrl-shift-Z OR ctrl-shift-1 - to advance in flight mode
ctrl-shift-X OR ctrl-shift-2 - to back up to a previous flight mode
ctrl-shift-D OR ctrl-shift-3 - to display DATA (setting of Nav1 OBS indicator for instance)
ctrl-shift-SPACE OR ctrl-shift-4 for circuit training
ctrl-shift-C OR ctrl-shift-5 for airmans challenge.
ctrl-shift-B for DATA 2 - altitudecall (AGL) ground altitude, etc.

I'd also add, that sometimes if FSFS somehow got disconnected abruptly, or FSX locked up, that sometimes the best medicine is to shut both FSX and FSFS down and restart and it seems to clear up for me.  I run into that occasionally and nothing seems to advance, I'll do a restart of both of them and it seems to correct itself.
